The Fault in Our Stars is not able to be discounted in the US at Kobo.

I understand the US$2.99 at Amazon US converts to about NZ$3,87 at current exchange rates. Even allowing for a less favourable exchange rate and some fees and charges the difference is still high, especially when you are supposed to be getting a 20% discount.

But in New Zealand the Amazon price is $US 5.71, not $US 2.99.

Understood. It is not unknown for people to circumvent the geo-blocking and use a US Amazon account. In fact, a recent poster to these forums was asking about just that. And there has, of course, been extensive discussion of this topic on these forums. An Australian House of Representatives Committee actually recommended Australian's be educated in how to overcome this type of price discrimination by circumventing the geo-restrictions. This is of course a personal choice.

And Amazon can cancel your account if you do that, so it is not really the same thing you are buying.

Maybe we should just stick to pricing issues in this thread because that's what Brodie from Kobo is watching for.

The list is crap from my interest point of view ... but .... I've taken a pic (shown below) of one of the titles. Yuck!!! Yeah, if you find it attractive then good for you, but that front cover does nothing for moi!

Because this list, and it's quite a long one in scroll format, can't be filtered into genre categories it means that you get to see quite a lot of the sex covers advertising who knows what type of book.

It just irks me when there are fixed lists with a promo code, what a waste of a good code, eh!
Hey Lynx-Lynx,

Totally agree with you on the poor view experience for finding books when we run these sales. Bear with us, we're working hard to make it easier to navigate these pages... love the feedback though, please keep it coming.

Funnily enough since the UK prices increased due to the addition of the extra 17% Vat (and yes in my genre book prices have increased for new releases) the Kobo prices are cheaper, and that is before we add in any discount coupons.

Brodie, I was looking to buy Barbara Cleverly's new book Enter Pale Death but was shocked and surprised to find that Kobo's price is more than double that of Amazon and Google. As shown below, in the U.S. at Amazon and Google it's $9.43 while Kobo lists it at a staggering $21.59! It is couponable but I would need a very big (55% or bigger) coupon just to get it down to Amazon/Google range; any chance it will go down in price? You will also notice that the price actually went up at Kobo Canada from $16.79 to $22.99!

Here's some books I bought in the recent couple of months. None were purchased from Kobo because of the disparity in price.

Boys in the Boat: $2.99 Amazon, $9.99 Kobo
Quiet: $8.99 Amazon, $11.99 Kobo
American Sniper: $5.86 Amazon, $10.99 Kobo
In the Garden of Beasts: $5.99 Amazon, $11.99 Kobo
Flash Boys: $2.99 Amazon, $22.39 Kobo
The Art of Fielding: $5.99 Amazon, $9.99 Kobo

Just to add my 2 cents: Until a few months ago Kobo often turned out to be cheapest and I stopped comparing prices. That has changed and now I compare prices for each and every book and buy more at Amazon.com (I look at Google Play, but I still haven't figured out if I get an actual copy of the book on my hard drive to be sideloaded).
I don't know whether Kobo went up, or Amazon down; I take things as they come.
So, because of the prices (and because the Kobo Contest coupons are nowadays only valid in US, UK and Aus) Kobo is losing out as far as this customer is concerned. I assume they have their strategies well thought out so I don't think they really care.
