Lightbulb Free (nook/Kindle/iTunes) His Dream, Our Stories [Martin Luther King History Legacy]

So, it turns out that today was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (I freely admit to a thorough ignorance of US national holidays which I have no intention of actively remedying; laugh all you like, but I would cheerfully bet cash money that very few of our neighbours to the south could name when even Victoria Day, much less Louis Riel Day, takes place without resorting to Google or Wikipedia).

And thus, it seems like the perfect time to dig into ye olde stash of low-priority long-term freebies to post, for an especially nice one which will unfortunately require particular levels of compatible app/device to read.

But it's an amazingly nifty educational historical multimedia one, and well worth it if you happen to have said compatible device.

His Dream, Our Stories: The Legacy of the March On Washington by Kean University professor & historian Terry Golway (Wikipedia), in conjunction with Comcast NBCUniversal, owners of the NBC network, is a richly-illustrated and highly informative commemorative multimedia presentation of Exactly What It Says In The Title (Wikipedia), free courtesy of NBC Publishing.

Alongside the historical context write-up of the civil rights event during which Dr. King gave his famous "I Have A Dream" speech, this contains many video clip reminisces by persons who were actually there, lots of vintage photos and news coverage, helpful backgrounders on the treatment of African-Americans which led to the march taking place in the first place (for the vintage baseball fans in the audience, there's a clip of Jackie Robinson discussing civil rights on NBC in 1957), as well as follow-up contemporary reactions leading up to his assassination, and the enduring modern legacy of it all.

The Made for iBooks version also has additional extras in the form of a vintage NBC news "Meet the Press" (Wikipedia) discussion program with march organizers Roy Wilkins (Wikipedia) and MLK, as well as an unedited interview with MLK himself dating from 1963. There's also some kind of interactive function which I haven't bothered trying.

Permanently free (at least, it's been available since 2013 and they haven't started charging money for it) @ B&N, Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK), & iTunes (available to Canadians and apparently worldwide, when I spot-check random countries like Denmark).

ETA: turns out it's also readable online (minus videos) via its dedicated website with user-submitted stories and other bonuses. And free @ Google Play (not available to Canadians).

This is a very large file, at ~ 700 MB for the B&N & Amazon versions, and 1.8 GB for the iTunes version, but if you've the space and bandwidth, it's worth every bit.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because.

Enjoy!

Description
In recognition of the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Comcast NBCUniversal presents His Dream, Our Stories: The Legacy of the March on Washington, an interactive book featuring intimate interviews with more than 25 individuals, many who participated in the March, as well as community and diversity leaders who were impacted by this historic event.

Through their stories, readers will not only learn about the history of the March, but also of notable events throughout the years that eventually led to that hot summer day in August of 1963.

Included are interviews with key figures of the civil rights movement, such as Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young, Rev. Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, Mamie Chalmers, Marc Morial, and Rev. Samuel “Billy” Kyles, along with others who attended the March in person, watched it on TV, or were too young to participate but were affected by its legacy nonetheless. There is also an introduction by Lester Holt of NBC News and informative bonus features.

Also, this interactive companion enables you to add a story of your own and permanently save as a keepsake within the pages of this book. After it’s saved, your story can also be submitted for possible inclusion in an updated edition for all to read. You can even upload a picture from your iPad’s photo library to accompany the entry. And when you’re done, take a moment to let friends and family know via Facebook and Twitter with a postcard inviting them to do the same.

His Dream, Our Stories: The Legacy of the March on Washington is part of Comcast NBCUniversal’s online and broadcast celebration and will serve as an effective tool for current and future generations to learn about that fateful afternoon and how it helped shape the civil rights struggle in America from that day forward.
