How about just to PRETEND you are going to blast annoying drivers off the road? In actuality, just load it with windshield fluid.

Cops probably still wouldn't care for it ....

... nor would some psycho with a real gun. Never pretend you'll shoot someone. They may shoot you first out of self-defense.

I'd be more worried about them mistaking it for the real thing. It's one of the reasons that "brandishing" is a crime. If you're armed, by law, you have to behave responsibly. (Yes, obviously, I'm talking about armed normal people, not criminals or thugs, who think that brandishing is "cool.") You can't just pull a weapon and faux-aim at someone, to scare them. Although many people don't believe this, armed folks are really the most polite in the world.

@WT: it's tempting, however, when one is armed!

Some times brandishing can get you killed. Even it it is not a real gun. Even if you are a child. As CCL holder one of the things I was taught is to avoid confrontations if there is any way possible. It's not the time to "stand your ground," its the time to be a wimp. If you are going to draw your weapon it should only be when you are convinced that you may need to use it.

Indeed, and ditto. That's what I meant when I mentioned--armed folks are the politest in the world. :-)

I have no arms other than my mouth. Loud screams or a strident schoolmarmish lecture have saved me from many a situation. Plus a bit of a temper. Not that I recommend this approach, but it is not in me to go quietly into the night.

Trust me you don't want to hear me actually vent and rant. I'll do that in a few thousands of years when I'll be reborn in a world where free speech is universal and real.
Hopefully in such a future world, vents and rants won't be necessary as the world will be better and ranting will be redundant.
A man can dream, a man can dream...

I don't know. On the one hand, there's nothing lower than internet phishers and scammers. On the other hand, I laughed too hard for this to really be a rant.

This evening my wife came to me with a bit of a problem. For the past couple of days her Skype account has been bombarded with strangers requesting her to join conversations, etc. She just ignored them, which is probably the best thing to do.

Tonight, however, she got a request and the name sounded familiar. She asked me did I know anyone named Martin E. Dempsey? Apparently he's in the military.

Ummm ... you mean like General Martin E. Dempsey? The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff? Well, I know the name, but I don't know him personally.

We decided it was probably another scam.

Then we laughed, and laughed!

So the nation -- no, the world -- can sleep easy tonight! The highest-ranking military officer in the United States Armed Forces is (probably) not inviting my wife to offer her opinions on the defense of the nation.

Of course, if that really was him, and he really was in need of her advice, maybe we are in trouble!

Skype gives you an option to decline the contact request AND report it as spam at the same time. That's probably the best option.

(L)Users!

Gawd what a Monday! It actually started last night, around 10PM when my own router lost it's little mind. I'm betting someone tried to get in and failed, but the router was overdue for a firmware upgrade anyway.

Reset back to factory defaults, remove from any network, log in, update firmware, reboot, log in, restore settings file. FAIL!

The idiots don't support settings files across firmware versions. WTF?! Hello, idiots, that's the single most common scenario for restoring settings! Sigh.

So, slowly and patiently, rebuild the configuration on the router. Started working on the router at 6AM, finished by about 9:30 AM. Saved the configuration, not that I think it will help the next time! But everything appears to be working, for the moment.

Oh, except that IE 11 (and IE10) REFUSE to connect to it, since the cert isn't for the internal IP address my LAN uses. What WERE the idiots at MS thinking? Yes, I know, my router's web page doesn't have a valid cert. It's INSIDE MY NETWORK, let me connect to it you morons! Fortunately, both Chrome and Firefox work just fine. Both warn me of dire consequences should I choose to connect to this web site, but then let me do it.

In the middle of all this, three different users managed to lock themselves out of their machines. ALL claim they got no warning that their passwords were about to expire (Phhhtt!). (ever tried to reset a password on a remote domain from the RDP client on your iPhone? Since that was the only thing that had internet connectivity until I got the router back up.)

Now, one of the support guys has decided that he needs his desktop restored, since something he did totally wonked everything. Sigh. I wasn't even supposed to be working today!

ETA: I logged in to his machine, and his desktop had 68 GB of files on his desktop, including RUNNING VIRTUAL MACHINES for goodness sake. On his desktop! And he wonders why he was having problems? Really. There ought to be a LAW.

Talisker. Lots and lots of Talisker.
