You don't need to install Linux to get Koreader on your Kobo. Your Kobo device already has a version of Linux on it. The version of Koreader that has been ported to the Kobo devices, functions in that Linux environment, the Android version is coded to work in the Android environment, ect.

If you wish to contribute code to the project, you would need to follow the Github instructions to create the working environment containing the needed tools.

Luck;
Ken

best software Koreader and best people here, I am a kobo/koreader fan now.
Since I successfully installed a 2 years old Touch. I bought a mini and Aura recently.

Touch: changed internal microSD to 16G ($49 two years before, bestbuy)
Mini: extended internal microSD to its 4G capacity ($39 Factory Direct, Jan 2015)
Aura: did nothing, since it's internal card is not replaceable ($99 Christmas sale, Dec 2014)

this link helps me to replace/extend internal card

Thanks again, the software developer and the best people in this forum.

I searched, but did not find an answer. In KoReader, is there a way for the file extension to not show in the file manager? I don't need my files to show .epub or .kepub.epub.

Also, is there a way to show the series metadata in the file name?

Good question, I am not sure how a file name without the extension would be handled. What a number of us do is to add abbreviated number references to the titles, like: D01 Storm Front.epub or HP1 the Sorcerer's Stone.epub or Jim Butcher - Fury_1.epub or Lackey, Mercedes - Elemental Masters 0 - The Fire Rose.pdb That last is an example of one that needs some abbreviating.

I could make author subfolders and that could shorten the titles.

What I have now could be improved, but it has been working fine. The file structure developed over time and not much effort went into it, lazy I guess. I have the tools to clean it up but not much motivation.

Luck;
Ken

PS; If you use calibre, it can do it for you.

Thanks, I do use Calibre, which does exactly what I want using a metadata plugboard, for the Nickel side of things. However, it does not show up in the KoReader side.

in Koreader a file shows "Title - author.epub"
in Nickel a file shows "Series - # - Title" with author below, under :books:

Maybe it's because you use Save to File instead of Send to Device, don't you?

I don't use calibre that way. I did give it a try with a small library of about 600 titles, so calibre created the file structure it uses on my device. It seems to work, and adds some neat search potential. But, I only used it for some testing. (I should get around to cleaning that off my device.)

My file names and folder structure were/are created using normal file handling tools, in windows. While I was building it, I would use a simple sync tool to make the folder/file structure and contents on the device match the one I keep on my PC. I have all the file handling tools of the PC to manage the one on the PC.

Lately, I just drag any new book file out of the calibre "containing folder" and into the proper folder on my device. Then I make any changes to the file name, so that the file name fits in properly with the files already there. Now a days, I only add a few files at a time. (If I were doing it properly I would have added the file to the PC library and synced it to the device.)

Also, I don't use Nickel, and have all my e-books behind a "Hidden" folder.

Luck;
Ken

I use Calibre to sideload my books with the "send to" command. I changed the default behavior, which is author-title, to title-author. It makes more sense to me for non-fiction books, which I read quite a lot. There are different options that I haven't explored yet, I know for sure that "series" is included. The output file is highly configurable anyway.

The calibre save templates used for sending books to a device or saving to disk use the same template language as the plugboards use. The only extra thing to consider is that it generates the full path for the file without the extension. So, it can be used to create the directory structure.

There are a few suggestions in Techniques to use plugboards, custom columns and templates and there is plenty of discussion in other places. From memory, there are a few suggests for fiddling with the series name in the shelf management sticky thread.

On Macs the .Kobo directory is hidden by finder by default.

Sigh. I'm not a Mac user but I suspect a small piece of effort with google will turn up instructions on how to see hidden folders on a Mac.

I know that info is even here at MoBileRead but I'm too lazy to look for it
