Sometimes I prefer to watch the movie rather than read the corresponding book. This is especially so for science fiction where much of the story is visual. It also removes the filler material and info dumps.

The Martian does not have excess filler material and info dumps. It's a smooth read from start to finish.

I always made my kids before I would take them to the movie. ... if I'm going to throw away an hundred dollars at the theater, then it can act as an incentive to get my kids to become well-read. ... and we all get to complain about how the book was better... |

Definitely not a book to skip for the movie. I expect the movie to be good, but I KNOW the book is great! | |||

See, that's why I prefer to see the movie first. I expect the book to be better, but I also expect the movie to be good on its own. By watching the movie first, I get a good experience and a better experience; the book shows me all these little things the movie didn't have room for. OTOH, if I read the book first, I have a good experience and a worse experience, because I'm fussing about the cool things they had to cut...and who wants that?

I didn't know the movie will be out so soon! I can't go back to unread the first half. I'm honestly hooked. It's great. I finally have an astronaut as one of my all-time favorite characters (well I hope my perception stays that way till the end of the book).

Very ocassionally, the adaption proves to be better than the original. I found this with Wicked by Gregory Maguire. I found the musical to be much better than the novel.

Decided to skip NOS4A2 for the time being and read Odd Interlude, a novella set between Odd Hours and Odd Apocalypse, books 4 and 5 of the Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz. It is a monster-of-the-week style novella that doesn't delve into the overall arc of the series much but does introduce a character that might be back later, We will see. I really enjoyed it. Now maybe I will start NOS4A2 or maybe not. I really don't know what I want to read right now. If anyone has suggestions for espionage thrillers I am listening though. |
