Intel introduces PC on a stick

A new form factor for computing and reading on PC:
http://www.zdnet.com/article/ces-201...tag=TRE17cfd61

Quote:

If you have the Windows version, it will include 2GB of RAM and 32GB of flash storage, but the Linux Computer Stick only has half the RAM and 8GB of built-in storage owing to the operating system's smaller footprint. It does comes with a microSD card slot if you want to squeeze more capacity into the device. Other connectivity includes full-sized and micro USB ports, Bluetooth 4.0, and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. Unlike other sticks, Intel's can't currently be powered through HDMI, relying instead on the micro USB port to charge it.

The Windows 8.1 Compute Stick will cost $149 and the Linux version just $89 when they ship in a couple of months.
I could see this as a dedicated Calibre server or for turning big screen TVs into educational presentation systems.
Or really large ebook readers.

More specs at the source.

Too limited for me. I'd rather have a "Windowsbox" (similar to a Chromebox) at this price point.

Which ever it is the rest will be on there the day after release. Unless they've done something stupid like lock down the boot process - in which case it'll probably be a week.

Not yet.
Some of the commenters on ZDNET are wondering if the Windows version might accept a Linux install. No need to fret over which distro to get, then.
Of course, the first thing that popped into everybody's head over there was "XBMC".

I might be the only one thinking Calibre server.
No need for a screen or keyboard. Just remote desktop access software on a phone or tablet.

I've seen other PCs on a stick before, but they ran Android. I could see this being quite useful. You could bring your computer with you, and use it where ever you could find a monitor to plug it into. It would also be useful to plug into your TV set.

Cool - thanks. That's what I was looking for. Now to see if anyone else does this. HP has horrid designs. I want a black square box, not an ugly blue roundish thing.

Amazon's FIRE TV has sharp corners all around.
Seagate external hard drives, too.
Gets kinda hard after that.

There's probably some EU safety directive like the one that killed sharp tapering car noses.

Add to that, Chromeboxes from Asus and HP. The HP is a bit too rounded for my tastes, but it's much better than their Winbox. I like the designs of the Asus CB and the Fire TV best.

With more to come.
It *is* the 21st century out there.

(Intel has been showing a super low-power computer on a chip--processor, Bluetooth, etc-that can run for days off a button battery. Suitable for use in rings and pendants. Or ereaders.)

http://www.cnet.com/news/intels-butt...-any-wearable/

The 20's are going to roar.

Bodes well for the future. I have an Intel NUC (think Mac mini, only Intel based) connected to my tv. This particular version isn't as powerful as I'd want, but that's only a matter of time.
