You're rationale is good, but it ignores the fact that OP has not as yet mentioned that study. As far as we know, he heard about blue light and melatonin somewhere else. I know that's possible because I did, quite a while ago. I think it would be polite to not drag that argument into this thread.

I use a Kobo Aura H2O and in the dark (in bed), I have it set between 4-6%. Not all that bright and I can rea just fine. Plus, it doesn't prevent falling asleep. I quite often turn the light off, close the sleep cover and put the H2O on the night table as I am getting sleepy.
