Ah-ha, you mean as in the progress windows the Add Books and Save to Disk pop-up.

However, dropping a format file into the book details panel doesn't pop any windows (or none I can see), yet doing that crashes the 64 bit version.

At this stage SpiderOak is unanswered. If that's not in play, then other than getting James to download the source and to do some debugging I'm out of ideas.

it IS looking like someone will need to give him a "special" version with extra debugging outputs, if we are ever to understand this

but we await feedback on spideroak, and on my non-standard system fonts/font sizes query ( but I would not bet on the latter - it is the longest of long shots)

I'm also uncertain that all possible programs have been terminated, and it could be some weird service, driver.

Good morning again,

Okay. I am setting the environmental variable by going to the Computer icon on my desktop. I right clicked on it, and went to properties. Then I clicked on the advanced system settings which has a shield to the left of it. That opens up system properties. The middle tab is called advanced. At the bottom right of that particular page there is a button labeled environment variables.

Clicking on that button opens two Windows, user variables for me on the top. And on the bottom system variables. Both the environmental variables that I set were/and still are set in the system variable window, which is the bottom window of the advanced tab.

CALIBRE_NO_NATIVE_FILEDIALOGS = 1

CALIBRE_TEMP_DIR = 1

I have copied and pasted the variables above from the actual edit Windows,, and then added the = and the 1 afterwards to show its value.

**********************

Okay next… Good morning kovidgoyal.

I did have spideroak installed, but I removed the program using the standard Windows uninstall from the control panel. That is "programs and features."
Just to be clear, after the removal of SpiderOak, the 64-bit Calibre behavior remains unchanged. The program still freezes with add books or save a book to disk.

***********************

jamesgl

PS. I'm uncertain what you mean about fonts. If you will give me specific directions about how to pick and choose or how to tell which fonts you are either looking for, or fonts that need to be temporarily deleted from my system, I'll be glad to try and comply.

Did you ever have a second computer monitor attached to your computer before Calibre 64-bit stopped working? Did you ever have a higher resolution monitor hooked up to your computer before Calibre 64-bit stopped working?

I'm wondering if the dialog is coming up off the screen and because you cannot see it, you can do anything with it and it then appears that Calibre is frozen.

Okay… Finally! Success!

Uninstalling spider Oak is NOT ENOUGH using the Windows UnInstaller.

Spider Oak was, and has been uninstalled for a number of days.
If you look back up in the prior postings, you'll see when I said "Spideroak" was uninstalled. And it WAS uninstalled at that time using the standard Windows UnInstaller.

It is/was necessary for me to use regedit.
I opened regedit this morning, and did a search for "Spideroak." [Starting at the beginning of the registry, and working my way sequentially through to the end.]

I am sorry, but I neglected to count the actual number of instances. But … Every time I found an instance of "Spideroak" , I used the tab key to move back to the left-hand column which shows the overall directory or the name of the item that contains the search bit. [I don't know what it's actually called]. I then deleted the entire – overall directory. I don't know the actual name. There were a total of maybe somewhere between seven and ten further instances of "Spideroak" in the registry. I was not paying attention to the number of times that I deleted the left-hand columns.

After deleting all of them, just for the heck of it I tried to run the 64-bit version of Calibre and save to disk.

The sixty-four bit version of Calibre WORKED!

I can save to disk. And I can add new books.

So… Uninstalling spider Oak using – start – control panel – programs and features – is not enough. There must've been some element left over in the registry from the "Spideroak" install – after it's removal using Windows uninstall – that was causing the problem.

I'm sorry, but I did not pay close attention to how many actual instances of "Spideroak" were found, for which I deleted the parent – for lack of a better word directory.

First… Let me thank each and every one of you who helped me. Thank you for taking the time and expending the effort.

BR, very special thanks for your time and effort!

As near as I can tell, the 64-bit version is working perfectly.

Again many, many thanks,

jamesgl

PS I rebooted Windows just to be sure, and the 64-bit version of Calibre is still running perfectly.

good to know there was a solution.

I wonder if CCleaner would have found and removed those remnants of Spideroak?

BTW - I sent you a couple of PMs

cheers BR

Hi BR,
I got notification of a private message when I logged on earlier this morning, but it would not display in Firefox. It may be something with my browser. I do have NoScript, but it was off at the time.

Again, many, many thanks for all of your effort!

jamesgl

PS – I ran cclean (the free version) a couple of times and it never picked up any of those remnants. I also ran Glary, (the free version) a couple of times, and it never picked up any of those remnants either. Those remnants were in place until I used Regedit, and searched for the string.

Yeah, the usual remnants left after an uninstall don't do any harm, they usually refer to things that no longer exist; so, CCC, Glary etc can readily clean them up. SpiderOak, must have left some creepy crawlies in there - money spiders perhaps

Yeah possibly NoScript, I stopped using it years ago - it got too clever by half and got in the way - i.e me having NoScript = me doing NoWork.

What happens if you click on Private Messages ?

If that doesn't get you there you could run firefox in Safe Mode via Alt/H->Restart firefox with addons disabled or put an exclusion for mobileread.com into NoScript.

well done for finally solving it .

i recommend freeware Revo uninstaller for future use. it has several options increasig in intensity from use windows uninstaller to use that + various evels of scans & registry checks. you are in full control as it presents its findings for remnants but give you the choice of removing them.

ccleaner has only a basic registry cleaner that i never use, as most advice is not to use any registry cleaner in win 7...

Just thought I'd pop in and say, thank you for finding this!

It really is more convenient to use this on Windows. Pity there is no text configuration file to manage it all, but this has made me happy instead.

- actually, "stumble upon" was a bit of hyperbole, I went looking for something when someone (not here) was complaining about the minuscule 'thing' MS ship.

In any event, it seems to be a beautiful way of getting a look at all your environment variables, and much easier to edit than constant cycling through env and setx. So however you found it, thanks.

@eschwartz, @Terisa de morgan - I just googled for "windows environment variables editor" the Rapid one was the first of several, at least two more at source forge, and no doubt there are others elsewhere.

If you look hard enough you'll probably find one with a ribbon; Bowpad is a SciTe editor wrapped in a ribbon, it's almost as good as emacs
