I don't like going caseless. Although I feel like I'm pretty careful with my devices overall I just wouldn't feel comfortable without a case. My Kindle goes wherever I go and I'm not sure it would fare well rattling around in my purse while I'm out and about. I use the Origami case from Amazon so I get the added bonus of being able to prop it up in either portrait or landscape if I need to free up my hands.

The only thing I go caseless on now is my phone because it would be too big to fit in my pocket if I used one. I do have a screen protector though. My Nexus 5 fell on the tile floor at home and I thought it was fine but I found my GPS didn't work anymore. It turns out that the corner came very slightly apart and when I pushed it back together GPS was ok again. It took a lot of searching to find that fix.
For my tablets I use rooCase slim shell origami cases - they don't add much bulk and I can use it as a portrait stand. It also has microfiber inside that when I fold it back to read makes it not slippery when I lean it against my leg when reading. I even got sticky felt sheets to put in the case for my T62 so it wasn't too slippery when I read. Without a case the T62 fell a few times because it was slippery. I am unable to hold on to any device for too long so too slippery is a real problem for me. |

If I'm taking my reader away from home I usually put it in a case. At home, where I am reading on the couch or bed, I don't use a case. I have small hands and the reader is more comfortable for me to hold without any extra bulk or weight.

I use a Pelican case to transport the thing, but read it naked otherwise.

I went "caseless" with my first Nook Simple Touch (my first eReader). I just put it up in its box when I wasn't using it. One night I woke up (after falling asleep reading), put the Nook in its box and tried putting it up on the mantel -- but had turned the box upside down by accident. It fell out, slammed on to the bricks of the hearth and, when trying to grab it, I knocked it "face first" to the floor. I figured I had broken it for sure. It had (still has) a noticeable nick on the side, but otherwise it worked fine -- no scratches on the screen at all. That's the day I bought a case, and the Nook (and all eReaders that have followed it) have had their own cases ever since.

Not using a case on an ebook reader is like going outside in winter without wearing underwear.
At some point, something is going to break; and, at another point, something will freeze and fall off. I protect both. |

I still mourn the death of my first Kindle Keyboard.... it got knocked to the floor - in a sleeve most of the time - one too many times!

This thread has gotten me to try my sleepcover again. It's not that bulky, really. Might be an improvement over the super thin Kobo Aura. It's nice to be able to just open and close it to turn it on and off too. I'll keep it in the case and see how it goes.

I have a case for my HD+ and the added weight is annoying. I do like the grip it gives me plus the protection for this larger item because certainly it would have been damaged by now without it. For the rest of my ereaders, I just have a sleeve that protects the device when not in use or during travel. If I traveled by bus or train, maybe I'd consider getting a case, but it really hasn't been necessary. The only threat of damage seems to come from stuff in my purse.

I've always used a case on my devices. But mostly because I find prone, one-handed reading nearly impossible without one.

Years ago, I encased my beloved TREO in a beautiful, expensive, soft leather case and applied a screen protector. Nonethless, one day the screen cracked in my purse.
Since then, for all portable devices, I've adopted the phrase: "no glove, no love." My NOOK Tablet, NOOK HD, and smartphone are all equipped with the following:
