It helps in the sense that we at least have some stuff to look at and share. It doesn't in the sense that we're still the same people with the same skillsets and the same lack of time ;p.

Would someone without much experience but willing to learn be able to help at all?

Then that has to be turned into something the more common Kindle user can work with. This is actually the hard part of dealing with devices and their users. Only people with limited experience are the ones who can spot the things that need to be changed. - - - - - - - I have worked for companies where I did the above often - - Took the 'new' program down to, say, customer service and announce "Who wants to play dumb today?" No insult intended, and none taken (I usually had more volunteers than I could use) - I would bring up the 'new' program on their terminal, then sit back, watch and take notes. After all, it wasn't me that would be saddled with using it every day. - - - - - With all the advances in C.S. - the position of playing "typical end-user" is still always open on any project. ![]() |

Any action on this frontier? I am an experienced geek but do not currently run anything on linux since I work mostly in music and video editing/recording/production. That said, I made the move up from PW2 (lovingly passed along to my wife) to the KV. My biggest beef is the insane complexity of trying to organize my large library (not, necessarily and in most cases, obtained via Amazon) into a meaningful structure -- for me -- to facilitate reading and research.
I was exploring JBing the PW2 but couldn't find much online that was not a year old or longer, which made me hesitant to try anything since I didn't need to brick an otherwise pretty neat device. Now, since I still have the same organizational woes with KV, I returned here and came across this thread. I will be off line from next week through christmas as I'm having major surgery but would be will to assist after that time, if having my sort of input would be helpful. Or, has everyone just given up the goal of wrenching our products back into our control and away from the marketing monsters? |

Tell wife to keep the PW2 in "Airplane Mode" (wireless off) until you return and can deal with preventing (or preparing for) the 5.6.1 OTA update.
That is a **must do** Yes, things are nearly a year old, so is the PW2, this is its second year in production. No, we haven't given up yet. The activity here surrounding the PW2 5.6.1 firmware version should tell you that. ![]() |

Just when I got the hang of koreader and wanted to upgrade my jailbreak, my Paperwhite suddenly rebooted and installed this god-damned 5.6.1 firmware. I wonder what made Amazon change their way of dealing with this? For as long as I can remember, there were never any intentional jailbreak-breaking measures in place. If they cripple or remove the PDF reader in the next update, I'm back to copying from library books...

Beg to differ. Look at the history in the JB threads, they've been at it for *quite* a while

I think you sent two -
The one from the 'new' one and the one from the 're-furbished' one that replaced it. |

Hi all,
I am in Europe, I have MacOS and Linux machines available, I know a bit of programming and Unix administration and I'm willing to help. I currently have Kindle DX, PW, PW2. And I plan to buy an Voyage. - How can I help ? - Should I buy the Voyage now or wait ? - If I buy it now, should I do something special the first time I boot it ? - Once used, should I keep it in Airplane mode to prevent any update or does the Kindles only update if you specifically request it ? - Is it possible to downgrade Kindles ? |

* It can't get much more locked down than it is now. ![]() * We have enough "in the box" samples for now, thank you. * Amazon **OWNS** your KV device's behavior, updates will not make it any worse than with what is shipped. * Your DX, and PW - yes; your PW2 - it depends, maybe; the KV - no, the 5.6.x series firmware was the lowest version built for the device. |

All pre-fw5.6.x devices can be downgraded at will (5.4.5 requires mild trickery) and are under user control.
![]() The KV and KT2 ship with 5.6.x (earliest fw for those devices) and there isn't really anything more Amazon can do to it (than they have already). ![]() The PW2 is in a special situation, it originally shipped with 5.4.0 and can be jailbroken, unless you wait until it gets a 5.6.x update. Then it cannot be newly jailbroken (although a previous jailbreak will carry over). No earlier devices are likely to get updated to 5.6.x, as they are already EOLed. knc1 will correct me if I am wrong, but if you can get an exploit on the PW2 with latest firmware (careful, make sure you jailbreak first) then it should work on the KV and KT2 as well. If you get the KV, feel free to be as negligent as you like, because you already have no access. Last edited by eschwartz; 01-01-2015 at 11:09 AM. |

That is the way I understand it also.
Some things have been learned from the "first power-on" samples, but nothing that helps the current situation for devices that ship with 5.6.x firmware(s) pre-installed. |
