+1 on Watership Down. Great book, whether you're 12 or 52. But sexual overtones in The Once and Future King? Perhaps I should re-read it (it's been quite a while), but I don't remember any...

Lancelot falls in love with Guenevere and she him. King Aurthur makes loves to his sister who has Mordred who causes Aurthur's downfall because of the affairs.

There are sexual overtones in the legend. In this case, it's not appropriate.

Nobody mentioning the Earthsea books by Ursula Le Guin? I read them in Dutch translation at about that age, and they were pretty much my favorite books at the time (the original trilogy, that is; the rest didn't exist yet back then).

Ah yes, so it's one of the non-Disney-ized versions of the Arthurian legend? I forgot; what I remembered of it, it had a light, even somewhat whimsical tone to it.

I think pdurrant was trying to say that parents who have a Christian viewpoint might not approve of a book that promotes atheism even in a fictional setting.

Yeah, I know that was what he meant. That's why I said I didn't mean it personally, and why I added the smiley. Don't shoot the messenger and all that.

I'm an atheist myself, and being 50 years old, I can laugh at small-minded people like that. A 12-year-old can't. But this isn't the place to have a discussion like that, so I won't say any more about it.

Yes, but more importantly, in this specific case, I expressly mentioned that the parents are rather devoutly Christian, and wouldn't look kindly on me giving their 11-y.o. any reading material that defied that view. Not at this time--perhaps not ever, but I assume that when he's older, I'll be able to give him more broadening material. Managing to cut myself off from the boy now, by alienating his folks by giving him something that (arguably) promotes an atheistic view, wouldn't help him.

As I recall GC, it wasn't so much atheistic as it was anti-formal-religion, in that the major religious institution was trying to stifle independent thought. Nonetheless, I want the first 10-20 books/series to go smoothly. I can introduce more even-handed themes later, if the boy seems interested. In my own family, that sort of exploratory reading would be lauded (in virtually any category/direction/philosophy, not merely religious or political or...?), but this is NOT my (side of the) family, (and not even that close to DH, on his side) so...better safe than sorry at this particular point. After all--as near as I can tell, he has no other voracious readers in his immediate family. One eccentric and like-minded aunt might be his sole co-conspirator in being a book junkie.

Hitch, I'm a little puzzled. You're asking for fantasy recs, but then you talk about the "Pern" series. They are SF, not fantasy.

I would repeat the recommendation for David Eddings' "Belgariad" series. Wonderful fantasy which is perfect for an 11-yo.

Science fantasy, perhaps, like anything with teleportation and time travel.

If you take the view that "if science can't currently do it, then it's fantasy", the range of "SF" would be extremely narrow. The "Pern" series is always categorised as SF. Don't take my word for it - look it up elsewhere.

I'm quite happy to take McCaffrey's word for it - she always considered herself to be writing SF, and it's well and truly within the (broad) bounds of the genre. But I've also got no problem with people considering it science fantasy, and it follows a lot of the tropes of the fantasy genre. There's a reason we use the umbrella terms F/SF or speculative fiction; the boundaries are very, very unclear.

Teleportation and time travel are definitely Science Fiction tropes! Science Fiction (by my definition) is anything that is based in a particular field of science, can be scientifically studied or created, technologies and space [as in space travel, planets, alien beings, etc.]

Fantasy usually has to do with mythological, fairy tale, or fabled beings [Vampires, Elves, Fairies, Trolls, Werewolves, etc.], Magic, and/or the Paranormal / Supernatural.
