New Kindle Word Wise feature

Well, I can think of a couple o solutions to blown up images, but I'm not sure either are worthwhile IF there is a fix coming sometime soon-ish...

Have you tried putting the image at 100% width inside a div set to 70% or however much was your intended width?

Alternatively, just enlarge the image canvas to include exactly as much white space you want around it (so if you wanted it to be at 60% an the image is 360px wide, add 120 white pixels to it on each side).

Both these solutions require quite a bit of work, though, and any image intensive book will be a boring hell to adapt...

This is how our KF8 images are always coded. We tried variations on that theme, we tried putting them inside paragraphs, inside divs, the usual. Even Amazon thinks it's a bug.

Yeah, I think that's what I mentioned as a possibility some posts back, but...we have one book in right now with 487 images. I'm not really grooving on that idea. And then what--redo it when the bug is fixed? Yeesh. And it would look like holy hell in sepia and night.

Why not just ignore it and wait for the fix? Unless you mean to say that you will update all your previous books as well... for an acknowledged urgent bug.

The problem will be when clients look at their books on PREVIEWER. The latest KP has the Voyage--warts and all. That's what I'm anticipating. Otherwise, yes: I'd warn them about it, and let it go. But now they'll see it, up close and personal.

That's what I perceive as my issue--customer perception. And, unusually--not a wrong perception, either. I'm accustomed to clients not being able to grasp things like the size of the reader, or that Kindle KF7 can't indent from the right-hand side, that kind of thing--but this is a real display issue, and I can't even with confidence say, "oh, sure, it'll be fixed by X." And yes--it will affect every single book ever made, using CSS--not merely ours. {sigh}

BTW, Word Wise doesn't affect Kindle book authors/producers at all since the definitions are automatically generated. I.e., existing books won't need to be updated.

When enabled, Word Wise will change the line spacing of all lines of a paragraph, even if no definitions are being displayed above a particular line.
However, if Word Wise is disabled, Word Wise enabled books are being displayed like any other Kindle book.

Unfortunately, I can't send you these files, because they're copyrighted.

You could manually install the latest PW1 firmware with WordWise support even on unregistered Kindles, but it'll most likely kill the jailbreak and you'd need to register your PW1 in order to download free WordWise-enabled Kindle books (e.g. A Tale of Two Cities) from Amazon.

That's very odd. B004EHZXVQ is published by Public Domain Press or something similar. But the print edition is published by Summit Classic Press (or something similar). Only the latter says anything about copyright, and that appears to be Amazon's Search Inside boilerplate.

The opening is differently formatted between the digital and print editions, though the text seems the same.

In any event, I don't see anything Wordy-Wise in the e-book Look Inside. Does it show up only on certain firmware-updated Kindles?

Word Wise generated words are generally not shown in the e-book Look Inside. However, Word Wise support is clearly indicated in the product description:

AFAIK, as of July, 2015, Word Wise is only supported by the Android Kindle app, PW1, PW2, PW3, Voyage and Basic Kindle models with the latest firmware and the latest Kindle Fire HD/HDX models.

IMHO, Word Wise is overrated, the definitions are obviously machine-generated and the tiny font, which can't be adjusted, makes it difficult to read definitions.

Aha! I hadn't noticed that.

Interesting that the book is not lending-enabled. AFAIK a KDP publisher can't turn off lending, so Public Domain Books must be a legitimate publisher with another entry point to the Amazon store.
