Thanks Ghitulescu. I didn't even know you could do it that way. Sheesh. So simple. The Calibre did transfer two epubs perfectly though when I sideloaded them.

I hear what you were saying about having the PW or Aura to test the resolution of covers but I can't really see there ever being any issue with the covers. What sort of issue might you identify on an e-reader?

And I'm leaning toward the Kindle because of this deal I ran into with the PRS300. Seems if I do buy commercial ebooks chances are it will be from Amazon. And the epubs I get from other places I can just convert in Calibre and plop them on the Kindle.
The thing with the 300 is that it does not have full justification. And there are a number of bugs that have since been fixed in RMDSK 10 (equivalent to ADE 3) which is what the Kobo uses in firmware 3.12.0. So, the Aura will show you the text like most people will see it with a newer version of ADE (or RMDSK). Because the Aura has a resolution of 1024x758, you can test any graphics in an ePub to make sure they are readable. And you can sideload fonts to be able to see what they look like before embedding if you do want to embed any.

So in other words when you make a usb drive do something it becomes a device, right? And then since the eReader is a device already, having one device (the usb drive) interacting with the other device (the eReader) was what was causing the wonkiness, right?
All you do is use the 'connect to folder' option on the "Sharing" icon (the same place you start the content server or the Wireless DEVICE connection).

Currently Calibre Companion is the only software that uses WDC and the connection is only activated by user command, from the device.
Simply Arming WDC does not violate the 2 device rule.

I didn't know about this.

I looked at it and found that they have "appropriated" the name "Calibre Companion" for the plugin. I contacted one of their developers and asked them to change the plugin name.

So does the Calibre Sync Android app. It's the only other WDC user I know of.

ducks. I didn't do anything with the "Sharing" icon on Calibre. When I connected my eReader Calibre popped open a window saying something like 'device detected.' Then an additional tab appeared at the top something like 'transfer to device.' When I clicked on that it sent the highlighted file to my eReader.

The problem for me started when I (with the eReader connected) went to add a file from my usb drive to Calibre. Then it got really problematic when I transferred that file to my eReader.

I was just exploring now and when I (from "Sharing") press "connect to folder" I get a window (listing my files) titled "select folder to open as device."

I'm pretty sure that's what you're referring to but as I said I didn't do that.

My bottom line is I want to avoid the sort of mistake that I made before. As it stands I would just be adding my files to Calibre NOT from the usb drive but from the computer somewhere. (If I have them on the usb drive I'll transfer them to the computer and then add them to Calibre.) Then I should be okay to do the transference to the eReader, right? Or would it be wise to dismount and remove the usb drive first just to be safe?

I'm still not absolutely sure what the two device rule is.

If a device is detected, there is no good reason to use 'Connect to Folder'.
As a matter, you would need to disable the normal device driver to get it to work at all.
If you want to know what books are on the DETECTED device, use the device view icon (appears when a device is detected)

I think you are going for a replacement device

Ha ha. Yes. Agreed. May this thread (and my confusion) rest in peace. (Until I get my replacement device. )
