It is georestrictions that are the issue. But I've posted some Google Play deals for the UK. Just see the message before this one.

Cheers, Jon - those ones work fine. Never having bought from Google Play I was just a bit baffled by the lack of any buying mechanism in the previous lots of links. Is it just a normal ePub bookstore that gives you the usual ACSM file that you load into ADE?

Can't speak for all the books, but when I upload, I just upload a regular epub file.

I occasionally buy from Google Play, but I go through the Google Books interface (books.google.com). When I click the option to buy (the button with the price on it), it carries me through to Google Play and has me log in to complete the sale. After buying, you can view your library and download from there. Every book I've bought has been a standard ADE book with an ACSM file.

Yes, standard ePub with the ACSM file.

I had to use a UK IP to get to the UK Google Play. When I did that and went back to the US Google Play, I saw exactly what you saw, no way to buy anything). So yes, it is definitely georestrictions as to why you cannot buy in the US Google Play.

Anyway, I hope some of those deals will come in handy for those in the UK.

Bargain @ 99 cents for today only (Dec 18th) from Open Road Media according to the newsletter (couponable @ Kobo, price should be good at the other standard Canada & US retailers, may or may not also be discounted in other regions, etc.):

Chip Crockett's Christmas Carol by Tiptree, Mythopoeic, and multiple Nebula and World Fantasy Award-winner Elizabeth Hand (ISFDB, Wikipedia) her World Fantasy Award-nominated festive short novel. I skipped buying this during ORM's Cyber Monday sale for $1.99 (actually I kind of ran out of time before the sale prices expired), so I'm pleased to see it go even cheaper and will be scooping it up. Sometimes apathy pays off (although apparently the proceeds are slated to go to an autism charity, so I wouldn't have minded paying the higher price for it earlier).

The father of an autistic child dreams of a Christmas miracle in this moving short novel nominated for the World Fantasy Award—proceeds to be donated to Autism Speaks

When Brendan touches his four-year-old son, Peter screams and pulls away. He suffers from a form of autism known as Pervasive Developmental Disorder and has no idea how much his father wants to make him smile. Their relationship is tortured, but Christmas is coming, and a miracle might come with it.

An unlikely harbinger of the holidays arrives in the form of Tony Kemper, Brendan’s childhood friend who’s never quite gotten over his glory days as a 1970s punk sensation. Broke, unemployed, and homeless, Tony has recently become obsessed with the long-canceled Chip Crockett television show, a beloved memory from when they were kids. Not a minute of footage remains of Chip, but these three boys are about to discover that when an entertainer is truly great, his magic will last forever.

Previously serialized online, this is the first time Chip Crockett’s Christmas Carol has been published in ebook form. Elizabeth Hand will donate all proceeds from this book to Autism Speaks in honor of special education teacher Anne Marie Murphy, who was killed in the Sandy Hook shooting. The two attended the same high school, where Murphy was a friend of Hand’s younger sister.

It's a good story. And if you grew up in the New York City viewing area, and are old enough to remember Sandy Becker, you'll enjoy it even more.

Well I was born and raised in the mid-west and don't know who Sandy Becker is but helping autistic children is certainly a good cause to donate towards.

Yes, and some books have both PDF and ePub available.

Downloading can be a bit challenging. See my post here for details.

I highly recommend Her Husband's Hands and Other Stories, by Adam-Troy Castro. One of my favorite reads of the year (I even reviewed it here: http://sentidodelamaravilla.blogspot...tories-by.html )
