I recently read Superheroes as well, and I concur with your assessment.

And, OMG, I just finished reading The Martian and I have to say, it's the best hard sci-fi book I've read all year.

They have the poll close so early - I wasn't finished reading The Martian yet! I would have voted for it. I suppose they want the lists created so people will buy the winners as xmas presents. I'm reading the Fantasy winner now.

Did Time of the Dark a couple months ago; and I enjoyed it.

I read too much and can't afford to buy books at regualr prices, so I have to setttle for whatever is cheap (or free) at the moment, so I am plowing through Humble bundles and bargains of the day (and the occasional physical copy acquired at the only used book store in town or Goodwill).

I wait for the bargains, but in books that I want. So Kobo competitions are good, as are Kindle daily deals. I have over 700 waiting to be read, so I can afford to wait!

I haven't read this yet! So many books so little time. Haha. I haven't gotten this book yet either. What are those top 5 books you read in 2014, Hampshire Nanny? I'd like to know because I want to expand my reading list for 2015.

One of the best and most edge of your seat sci-fi tales I've ever read. Recommended without reservation.

Top 5 books I read in 2014 in the order that I read them. (I couldn't begin to rank them against each other!)

Leaving Everything Most Loved by Jacqueline Winspear*
The Martian by Andy Weir
Nightmares! by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller
The Paper Magician by Charlie N Holmberg
Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry & Ridley Pearson

Close runners-up:

The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches by Alan Bradley**
Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford

* Leaving Everything Most Loved is the most recent book in the Maisie Dobbs series. I don't think it's a stand-alone read ... you really need to have read prior books in the series.

** The Dead in Their Vaulted Arches is the most recent book in the Flavia de Luce series. It is *not* a stand-alone read. A lot of its appeal to me was because it tied up a long story arc.
