Failed to "save to disk" - WindowsError

Failed to save: Beautiful Lies by Gina Whitney to disk, with error:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\save.py", line 173, in do_one_write
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\save.py", line 216, in write_book
File "os.py", line 157, in makedirs
WindowsError: [Error 5] Access is denied: u'F:\\'

And it doesn't matter if its one book or a highlighted section. I still get the windowserror. I've used Calibre for quite some time and thought I was pretty knowledgeable about it but I am stumped. I did lose all of my books a few months ago when my laptop crashed. Bought a new one, found as many of my books from saved external harddrives, etc. I thought everything was good. Did I maybe tweak some setting that is preventing me from saving to disk? Any help would be so appreciated.

The problem is that you do not have access to the root of drive F. That's not uncommon these days on Windows. Create a subdirectory on drive F to save to and that should work.

So drive f is actually an external memory stick that I was trying to save books to. If I create a folder inside the stick, that should work?

Given that it's a memory stick, you should have access to the root. I've never had a problem with access to the root of a memory stick. But yes, try creating a directory and see if you can save to that. Also have a look at the permission of the root of your memory stick to see why you don't have access.

Thanks so much for the tips. I will check into this when I get home from work. I reformatted the memory stick before I tried to save to disk (not sure if that created a problem). Hopefully it's a quick fix. I've never had this problem before but I haven't saved to disk since I replaced my old laptop with this new one and the new one is Windows 8....lol...

@anagel - What format is the stick - FAT, FAT32, or NTFS ?

If NTFS, did you format it on another machine ?

no it was formatted on this laptop. I took the advice of JSWolf and created a new folder inside the mem stick drive and that works... although for the life of me I don't know why this is occuring. I used another memory stick and got the same error...

I just tried it too - and got the same error - to the root of any drive, SATA2 or USB, formatted FAT32, or NTFS

IMO its a defect in calibre, because other programs can save direct to the root of any of my drives.
