I can speed read but it is not comfortable for me. Too much like work. With an ereader I read slower than with paper and much slower than on monitor or tablet.

I prefer my leisure reading on the ereader, but if I was comfortably reading faster on the ereader, I can't see this as a bad thing.

The purpose of reading faster for me is to enjoy more books. I would, and do, enjoy the books I read, or else why bother with leisure reading. But I fail to see how slow reading, without additional benefits such as more enjoyment or retention, is a virtue in and of itself.

It is kind of like saying people who do things slower or have less in the way of advantages such as material goods, education, living conditions etc. enjoy what they do have more than those considered more fortunate. Sometimes true I am sure, but I will opt for the advantages, such as indoor plumbing, myself.

No, it's more like saying that people who eat quickly don't enjoy their food as much.

I'm in the 'books are to be savored, not consumed' camp, but hey, whatever's more important to you.

I prefer consuming books, I just believe, sincerely, with all my heart, that speed-reading will result in less net consumption.

I agree with the idea that there is no need to rush reading. Books can't just get up and walk off on their own legs after all. While books borrowed from the library do have a due date it's not like those who borrow multiple books at once are usually slow readers. You can read quickly and yet not be a speed reader. I read the 7th Harry Potter book within 24 hrs, not because I speed read, but because I couldn't put the book down for very long (and I am disabled so I didn't have to worry about getting up on time for work in the morning). When I was in college I read "The Stand" (the extended version) in less than a week. Some people are naturally fast readers. Trying to read faster than you can comprehend won't gain you much as you miss out on details that add to the story.

I'm still not dismissing the thought of learning to speed read and still retain the comprehension (like in reading emails). The only problem I've had with trying to speed read on a fantastic fiction book is when it's over, you want to re-read it again, because you feel as if you haven't completely enjoyed the whole premise of the book. It's like a delicious cake you ate for only a minute when you could have savored it for a time much longer than that.

I actually have that feeling about every book I finish that I really enjoyed reading. I always feel I should have extended my stay and regret finishing it.

I read Harry Potter 7 in about 6-7 hours, but that is because I read straight through. Hooray for our days of youth.

And I read every word and understood it too.

It is very easy to do 1) legally and 2) without PD. I have over 4500 books that I've gathered just over two years and most of them were freebies on Amazon of fairly current books (mostly indies).
Same here. In fact, my project this weekend is to delete most of the freebees from my Amazon library which is just too clunky to be usable by my family members (on their devices hooked to my account). I have them in Calibre, so someday I may get to them.

I have more books than I'll probably ever be able to read but I don't care. I'd rather have too many books than not enough.

Very true. I'd rather have my library fill up of books I'm planning to read, than long for books that I can't get my hands on. I like having more options, especially when you're in a mood for a different genre.

I mostly read books per recommendation so I know what I'm delving into though.
