You get two choices -- Amazon or Alexa. I left it it at Alexa. No idea if Amazon is a male voice.

Anyone having problems with their Echo just randoming turning itself off in the middle of a music playlist. Mine plays for about 20 minutes then just turns off. I can't seem to find a setting for it.

I prefer and use Alexa since it is a woman's voice and is more personalized. When addressed as Alexa, prior to a command or question, a subtle blue light illuminates as a thin ring around the top outline of the cylinder to indicate "she" is waiting for a command or question. A funny thing happened recently when a nearby TV was on during a Lexus commercial. A voice in the ad said something to the effect, "Give yourself a Lexus this Christmas....." and Alexa got excited and emitted her lighted blue ring in anticipation of responding. Too funny. 😁

I have even used the hands-free timer function when cooking. It's great!

Mine did turn on suddenly. I was listening to Joey, by Concrete Blond, pretty loudly. I paused it and went out. My daughter was home alone. Suddenly it turned on, to the part of the song-you were scared and I was scared too. Really loud. My daughter thought it was an "ironic murderer." She watches way too much Criminal Minds. Oh, and it turned on because I left the remote on the couch and the dog laid on it.

I was thinking of naming mine "computer", but then every time I watch Startrek (it's like chocolate for the soul to me), the thing would probably respond to my TV.

Then again, why worry about this now? I may get an invite in 2029, by which time I will have compiled a very long list of alternative names

I like that Amazon is responsive to user feedback and acts on it by updating the cloud.

My Echo mispronounced my town, but since it was the only town named that in all of the US, I didn't have much hope that it would be fixed. I sent Amazon a note anyway, they thanked me, and now three days later I asked for the weather this morning and she's saying the town right!

From what I've read, Amazon's been very responsive to Echo customer feedback. It'll be interesting to see the device's capabilities evolve over time!
