When you initiate a metadata download from "Edit Metadata" - if you have the isbn field populated with a single number (either ISBN 10 or 13) is that the only field that is sent to the sources as part of the search or does it send additional information such as author and title? I ask because sometimes the results returned are for different books or incomplete - but when you perform the same search with the isbn on the same site (say Amazon) the result is more specific. 2) After updating the metadata from a source, the isbn field is often populated with additional info. Is there a way to prevent that? I don't want amazon's number auto included for example. 3) I imagine searching online by isbn is the probably the best way to get the most accurate results, is there a preference for a source that is consistent? WorldCat? |

			1) Additional information -- all of it is sent.

	2) You cannot prevent it. This is specific to ISBN. 3) Everyone has their own preference, personally I like Amazon. |

ISBN identifiers filled in says give me metadata for this ISBN

Identifiers blank says try and find by title or title-Author ISBN does (MUST) change with edition (includes any publishing house change) Not found problems can be traced to widely differing values. Extra stuff in title field Spelling errors ![]() inconsistent Author name usage (their (the lookup source) or Publishers end) [How many ways can you represent your name? That is how many variations are in the Metadata Sources or on book covers ]. Fixing them in your(Library) DB before getting other metadata can lead to lookup failures
