Repeatedly Crashing - Frequency Increasing

Sometime around my upgrading to versions 2.11 or 2.12 Calibre has been frequently and inexplicably crashing, either while I am manually entering metadata (such as tags) or during the conversion process.

I'm not sure what information would be the most helpful nor where I should provide said info.

I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.1; Calibre 2.12 with the following plugins (please see attachment) all updated per the plugin installer:

Hmm dont see anything suspicuous in that crash report. The crash is happening inside Qt. In my experience, on OS X, most Qt related crashes happen ebcause of the OS X accessibility settings. Check that you dont have some accessibility related function like screen reader, voiceover, assitive keyboard etc inadvertantly turned on, those tend to cause problems with Qt.

Hmm I've just double checked every option under "Accessibility", nothing is enabled or turned on.

The next step is to disable all the third party plugins and see if that makes the crashes stop.

Most of them (like Count Pages and Reading List which are main parts of my work flow) can not be disabled, meaning I'd have to unistall them altogether.

Also, if it is one of the plugins, what in the world would make it break on my system but not someone elses?

You can run calibre via the command-line, using

Code:

calibre --ignore-plugins

This being OSX, I believe the command-line tools are not in the path anymore. SO you will probably need

Code:

/Applications/calibre.app/Contents/console.app/Contents/MacOS/calibre --ignore-plugins

Open Terminal.app, and paste that line of code in. Hit enter. calibre should start up with the

Code:

--ignore-plugins

parameter, which makes it... ignore plugins.

@Nyssa - if you don't get any crashing when all plugins are ignored then:

My experience has been that removing a plug-in does not remove the plug-in customisation, so on reinstalling the PI everything is as it was. Which is consistent with uninstalling and reinstalling calibre.

What I do in situations like this is to remove all of them and then add them back alphabetically, don't bother trying to second guess most probable candidates, IMO its better to work methodically.

Using this approach I was able to narrow down the cause of calibre intermittently crashing, first time ever for me. it was a glitch in one of the PI's that had just had its kb shortcut process amended.

At the time I was testing the PI's after JimmXinu and davidfor had amended them.

Hmmm - that makes me wonder if one of them could be culprit in your case, IIRC the change was related to keyboard shortcuts on OS/X. I didn't test all the PI's they changed, only the ones I use.

Hi everyone, first off thank you all for helping me, I didn't want you to think I was being rude by disappearing yesterday. I'm sick at the moment and busy with work.

I haven't had a chance to implement this fully, but I didn't have any crashes yesterday for the 30 odd minutes I used the program while having Barnes & Noble, Fantastic Fiction, GoodReads, and Webscription disabled. I only mention it because it actually caught my attention.

I will try to get more time tonight or tomorrow to test more extensively, but I was curious if one of those 4 could even be the culprit in the first place?

@Nyssa - those are metadata download PI's, they wouldn't have been in my short list of possible culprits. But, as I said trying to second guess these things isn't worth the effort.

Better to try to find a repeatable situation where the crash happens. Then uninstall all the optional PI's and repeat that scenario, if it still happens then that will prove (on balance of probabilities) that the problem is not with an optional PI.

If it doesn't crash then add the PI's back one at a time and re-test. Yes it's tedious, and best done without any interrupts, I tell myself its good for the soul. I've lost count how many times I've had to do it with Firefox extensions and Photoshop plugins.

And no need to apologise for going AWOL - real life must take precedence over the gadgets with which we surround ourselves.

I'm having the same issue. It typically only happens when I try to convert more than one book at the same time.
