It's ePubs that are the ones you want to check, though. For Kindle books, all you have to do is see if you have any books of type "AZW".

Depends, if you got them from an e-ink Kindle the KF8 ones will be AZW3 no matter what.

Maybe try to bulk convert all azw3 files? Calibre can't convert files with DRM.

Of course convert into a format not already in the library, so that they can easily be spotted and deleted afterwards.

That would be nearly as awkward as trying to open each one in the viewer.

Why is that? Is there a limit to how many conversions you can do at a time? I've never used bulk convert (I need more control ), so don't know much about it, but I assumed you could just let it run overnight if necessary.

Oh yes, let us run overnight conversions to discover the DRM status of a book.
Or even if it only takes an hour or so (bulk convert on 100+ books).

Then we of course need to delete all those useless formats we don't need.


At least you can do it all in a few sets of clicks, with a waiting game in between, versus quickly by clicking on the viewer for each book... but I still prefer the idea of the script I linked, or Quality Check for EPUB-only.

Or, heck, why not just check the debug output of calibre, since I setup calibre to always run in debug mode and output to a logfile? Works for me...

Okay. So it's a question if you want tedious or slow

I never import books directly from my Kindle so azw3 with drm is not something I think I'll ever encounter.

Yeah, checking for a header flag is always king when it comes to speed.

If it didn't exist it woud need to be invented.

Actually since calibre 2.10, this isn't true. With version 2.9 I could do batches of 20 with no trouble. But with the later versions I even had it fail to deDRM one in a group of 5. I went back to 2.9 until I got caught up.

Yes, it started going wrong for me, too, a couple of Calibre versions ago. I think it happened when Kovid optimised the process for adding books. I have to add them one at a time now to be sure of the tools working.

A while back I could only deDRM in very small batches and Calibre required a fresh start. If it had been open for a while it would fail with even a single book for me. I'm not sure in which version this was fixed, because I made sure it was a fresh instance of the programand only added a couple of books at a time all the time. It wasn't until I got a new computer and was setting up Calibre that I forgot the previous limitations I'd place on the program and it worked with no problem.
