alansplace -- just saw the results for the Goodreads Best Books of 2014 awards.
https://www.goodreads.com/choiceawar...asy-books-2014 I find it horribly depressing, personally. Somehow it just edged out ALL FOUR of the best books! Skin Game came in 3rd. |

I heard of it, didn't seem very interesting really.
I can see why it would appeal to a world full of people who read Twilight & Co. ![]() Very disappointing as I would've loved Sanderson Butcher or Grossman to win (and haven't read Rothfuss, so I cannot judge). It was a difficult decision, so I'll let you guess which one I chose. ![]() |

About time you say Twilight. Not always the best book that is most popular. Look at Fifty Shades of Grey - as much as people complain how bad it is written, it sells amazingly well. It was actually pretty good if you read it as a detective / mystery. Hope they don't screw the movie up too bad. I guess they did though - the trailers are only focused on the dirty scenes ...

I am sure many way-too-hyped-up books have quality writing, and refuse to debate over any particular one.
I will only say this: the popularity of Twilight (as the best-known YA example) & Co. is certainly not because they are well-written, and it is this quality I roundly mock. Personally, I thought Twilight was decent, although nothing to rave about. It sure ain't no Sanderson... ... Dang, I broke my rule. ![]() |

I have a very good example for the most horrible thing ever. The target audience is young kids, but watch it as an adult and try to get it back out of your head is quite a challenge. My youngest grandkids love it, us not so much. Plain aweful.

Re:Twilight - Its Really Time to Move On
About 7 years ago a friend and I were both sick to death of hearing about Twilight, but neither of us had read it, and so neither of us could comment one way or the other on the whole phenomenon. We also both agreed that neither of us were quite curious enough to buy the book; luckily we didn't have to, because one of her friends had the whole set. So my friend would read a book then pass it on to me.
We agreed that the first book was pretty lame, not as awful as many still make it out to be, to this day, but pretty sophomoric. Book two was almost just as bad, but books 3 and 4 were markedly better and even quite enjoyable. They were also very much more adult oriented and not at all for young audiences - certainly not for children or even preteens. There is one scene in particular that I would not allow my 11 year olds to read, and they're pretty mature for their age. Yeah she jumped the shark a bit with one of her plots, but there was so much foreshadowing, I don't know how anyone couldn't see that coming from a mile away. I would have been much more (happily) surprised if she hadn't gone down that particular road - but it is what it is. I still have absolutely no interest in watching any of the movies, nor do I know if I'll ever want to reread the series again, but I do think people in general go overboard with the whole "hatefest" thrown at Twilight. Its as overplayed and overblown as the series itself. |

![]() ![]() In this scene from The Prestige, a 2006 film about two rival stage magicians, Harry Dresden can clearly be seen on the list as one of the performing magicians. ![]() |

Harry would wipe the floor with them...assuming he didn't accidentally burn down the theater.
