Surface Pros are marketed as tablets with keyboards. I admit they're really PCs (which is why I think they make poor tablets), but this is not what someone means when they write "PC." Besides, Windows tablets have about 3% of the tablet market so are really an almost non-player in the world of PCs or eReaders.

They're not doing "quite well." The only ones that are selling are basically laptops with detachable keyboards -- and even then the Surface market is at 3% of tablet sales (maybe it's come up a little, I don't know, by cannibalizing PC laptops sales). The ARM (RT versions) are basically dead.

Now if clear what I mean by PC ( something on desk). There are genuine reasons for using a PC as mentioned here but how many if those people would fall into a specific consumer group such as a student lending e-textbooks from library, regular amazon fiction buyer, (non ebook techie ) just a guess their behavior would be more or less fixed and probably predictable.
And then some people despite relaxable reading options available do prefer pc, is that due to some sort of healthy practice (personal ethos) |

It may not be what you mean, but I use my Surface Pro every day as an ultra-portable laptop PC, and so do the other people I know who have one.

I'm afraid you misunderstood me. When I said "the boundaries are blurred", I was referring to the definition of a PC, and I stand by that viewpoint. Is a Windows 8 tablet a PC? Is an Android tablet used with a keyboard a PC? Devices are becoming multi-functional.

I rarely read books on PC any longer. If I tried in the past I'd get eye strain which blurred out my sight for a while so that I had to stop reading til it cleared. I've never had that problem on my Kindle's though. Sometimes when I'm working on an ebook for here at MR I open it in Mobipocket to see how the Kindle format of the book looks, but that's about it.

It's even easier and more comfortable for me than using tablets for surfing and reading. I think that (inside the house) I would use 20" lcd monitor for pdfs almost as frequently as I would 10" tablets and eink and less frequently for epubs. My brightness/contrast settings for lcd monitors and tablets are always near the minimum, and I can read for hours without an eye strain that way. Last edited by markom; 12-03-2014 at 04:30 AM. |

I tried reading on my PC but it just doesn't work for me. So I use my PC for shorter reads like forums or blogs or the news but full books I cannot.

I do not read ebooks on my PC, although last night I did install the Kobo and NOOK apps onto my Surface Pro 3 as a test because I am considering getting a small 7" or 8" Windows tablet for my kids to read non-Amazon-approved books on. (Having recently discovered that NOOK and KOBO apps are not available in the Amazon AppStore.) I didn't actually read anything; I just opened up a couple of books to see what they looked like.
I didn't really read ebooks until I got my first eink ebook reader. I had tried reading on my Compaq Ipaq, but the screen was too small and I couldn't figure out how to get books for it. (I found ebook sites at that time to be difficult to navigate -- I suppose I just didn't want it enough.) I originally thought my answer was going to be, "No, and I never did." However, I now recall that I used to read anime fanfiction on my PC -- I'd copy the text to a word document and read through it like a book, typing in a word for a bookmark when I had to stop and deleting the entire document when I was finished. I don't read fanfiction anymore; lately I just read purchased ebooks on my phone if I want to read something while waiting for some process to finish up. |

Have you tried a stylus other than the included one? What case are you using? (assuming you travel w/ it?) Have you had to replace your digitizer cable yet? (or considered ordering the spare part pro-actively?) (Perhaps a mod should move this post to its own thread?) |

I have a lot of cases, but I mostly keep it in a Bob J Gear gel case (no slip silicone makes anything into a stand) together with a net book bag. I am using the Samsung stylus with the erasor. I have never had any digitizer issues. I did wait til the third production run. Last edited by Phogg; 12-03-2014 at 01:41 PM. |

For your info. I have never read books on my computer. I do read books on my phone and my tablet. 25-50 books a year. I work on my computer all day long, and sure that's reading. But other than "article" sized content or perusing the web...I have never liked reading on a PC.
