Kobo Discounts: Coupon Codes + Discussion

Someone in the Romance megathread asked for direct-linkage to each category in Kobo's Black Friday sale since she couldn't access the dedicated sale page and I thought I'd x-post the links I found here as well, since you do get a different set of books for each region but it seems you can only get to see the separate lists in the first place with some IP trickery.

There's some overlap between each country's lists, but the overall selection seems to differ (and the US has an extra Religious/Spirituality category which the other countries don't), and when I tried one of the UK lists in my Canadian account, a number of the books were available and seem to be at a reasonably low price, even if perhaps not as low as the UK sale amount.

Also worth noting is that when going through category lists, you often don't see the entire list. Only a select few from the total, of say, romance, appear in the romance list. You have to go through the master list and page through the various pages to see all the books on sale. I noticed this with a couple of the sales by browsing the master list. Some of that may be due to the fact that if a book is: Mystery, Romance, it only gets categorized in one--it will not show up in both.

It's tedious going through rather long lists, but it's the only way to see all the books that I know of.

I just noticed something interesting. I'm in the US and playing the US contest link (just reconfirmed by clicking the link in the email they sent me). Yet when I click on the covers of all but the first book in the contest, it tells me that book is not available in the US. Turns out all the links are going to the UK editions.

I like it better when Kobo's screwups do things like let you generate infinite codes for a contest.

I'm having a weird issue with this contest. I've been playing it for a few days, using the Safari browser in my iPad. Today when I tap the winning entry, nothing happens. I get the spinning circle to indicate there is interaction with the website server, then nothing, no acknowledgment that I won anything. No e-mail with a code either. When I tap the wrong answer, I get the red message that the answer was incorrect. I tried the Dolphin browser with the ipad. Same result. I tried on my iPad mini with the Safari browser, same result. I tried logging in from my Windows laptop with the Opera browser, and I get the message that the contest is not available in the country I am in. I am currently in the U.S. for the winter. When I registered for this contest, (from my iPad, in the U.S.) my only selection for country was Canada, so I used my Canadian address. I tried the registration options on my Windows laptop, and the only country available to me is the U.S. All my devices are on the same IP address, here in the U.S., all behind a router.

Kobo's Cyber Monday promotion is up: linkage to the main promo page, whose contents differ by region and may not be viewable from an IP outside eligible countries.

Canada, US, & UK all share the following promo:

CYBERMONDAY35 unlimited usage for 35% off selected titles from this list (same for all regions, mostly self-pub & author-republished backlist books)

Direct linkage to the promo pages for the trad-published sale books with differing selections for each country (but a lot of titles seem available at a reasonably low price in more than one), many of them couponable with contest and other codes:

• Canada: Great Fiction, Mystery, Romance, Non-Fiction, Teen Reads (also includes a lot of picture books for younger kids)
• UK: Fiction, Thrillers, Romance, Non-Fiction, Teens & Kids
• US: Great Fiction, Great Thrillers, Great Romance, Great Non-Fiction, Kids & Teen Titles (breaking the naming theme), Great Bundles, & Today Only! Bestselling eBooks for less!

A large portion of it seems to be carryover from the Black Friday sale, in case anyone might have missed something they were thinking of getting, but a good chunk of it is new.

Especially for the US, where Kobo seems to have put a whole bunch of Open Road Media titles in there (but a lot of them are also currently at the "regular" price as far as I can tell, unless there's further price-dropping/special couponage later as ORM have done for previous multi-store Cyber Monday sales).

However, there are some really good titles at good prices in there. UK readers can get a Daphne DuMaurier for £2, and Alan Dean Foster's Icerigger Trilogy 3-book omnibus is a dirt-cheap $1.99 (couponable!) in the US (ORM usually has the same bargain promo prices in Canada if the titles aren't geo-restricted, but they seem to be only sporadically matched for this sale, unfortunately, though maybe they'll drop later).

I'm having the same issue(nothing happening when the winning entry is clicked) with Chrome and Internet Explorer in Windows 7, so it's not an ipad/Safari issue. I'm in Canada, playing the Canada version of the contest.

I've just successfully played UK game, using Firefox.

So, it could be browser related or US CA related.

Here's the link to the Contest Rules page. On that page you'll find the links to each of the 3 countries Contest pages.

Try coming into the game from which ever one you want to. Bear in mind that the codes work across the 3 countries, and the only difference between the UK contest and the US CA contests are the questions asked.

I believe the contest links are different for each country. So if you are using the same link you used for Canada, it won't work. It may have started registering that your IP address was US so it stopped working, but that is too logical so probably not the case.

I will check the other posts and see if someone posted the US link and if not I'll go get it and post it.
