Better yet: I would possibly agree on a reason NOT TO UPDATE. But once you did update, since you can install your hacks anyway using MRPI, that is no reason to go back - expecially because that's way more complicate than install new packages. Indeed a reason could have been "It is evil because I cannot run/install app XYZ on fw 5.6.1", that was something I was expecting from OP. But then again, I was willing to know which hack, exactly, was not working in 5.6.1

The original of "5.6.1 is evil" predates MRPI - In fact, 5.6.1 is what required the creation of MRPI. |

Oh, I see.
Didn't know that MRPI was SO young... |

@knc1: I compared the mmcblk0 dump and the uImage (both are from firm 5.6.1), and it turned out that the offset is 0x00041000, so "seek" is still 65
![]() Can anyone else figure out the offset of other firm version? Last edited by variousvirgil; 11-30-2014 at 12:38 PM. |

Actually, ixtab's instructions seem to agree with GM's getkernels script (at least on my Touch, I'll check on a PW2).
Beware of the blocksize! GM (and Amazon's tools, IIRC) uses a blocksize of 1024, while ixtab's instructions use 4096. Every offset *should* still be a multiple of 1024, but take that into account in your maths .EDIT (on a PW rnning 5.4.5.1): Code:
dd if=/dev/mmcblk0 of=main_kernel.img bs=1024 skip=260 count=2370 )And the only difference between what getkernels dumps and what FW 5.4.5.1 bundles is a bunch of extra crap bytes at the end: uImage: Code:
002504f0 cc 04 25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 |..%.............| 00250500 ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff ff |................| * 00260000 Code:

Did I get that right, @knc1?

@NiLuJe : I have updated my last post and a stupid error has gone
so you can look at it again. It seems that the offset of uImage doesn't change (I think it is hardcoded), and I'll take a look at the partitioned data tomorrow.

@variousvirgil: Gotcha
. My answer has also been updated, w/ a check on FW 5.4.5.1 that seems to indicate all is golden .

@shamanNS: Which is why I checked on a 4GB PW2 ;o). (Speaking of: the RP is safe there too, something I wasn't convinced of before
).

PS: Those are not "crap bytes" - an erased flash device is "ones" not "zeros" like other storage media. |

downgrade PW2 JB1.10 no RP
Dear all,
Quick question if that's ok, as same happened to me. I too updated to 5.6.1 before updating JB, but in my case JB is at 1.10 and I don't have RP. The downgrade as described in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=196245 wouldn't work, right? Any possibilities to downgrade in this case? Thanks guys Last edited by ElRudi; 12-14-2014 at 04:28 PM. |
