I read paper books all the time. Availability is not there for a lot of titles especially through Overdrive and my library so I have read paper to keep my reading budget to a reasonable level. This year so far: 64 paper, 14 eBook.

Of course I "still" read paper books,

I find them easier on my eyes than the ebooks, all the academic books are still in paper and I prefer paper for a manual, I think that paper books and e books will probably cohabit for quite some time and I like that, paper is a good technology as an ebook reader is, there are benefits in both. |

The books are all in the public domain. And the only connection the movie had with the books was that they both took place on Mars and had some characters with the same names.

Yes, but only when someone lends me their book! I prefer the convenience and portability of my nook.

I do the same thing for my Mom, who is 80. After she's finished a book, it goes into a box for donation to either the Senior Center or the new VA. However, she decided yesterday that she doesn't want me to buy any more books from yard sales and just get them electronically either from the library or Kindle Unlimited.

I thought the John Carter movie was a reasonably good adaptation of Princess of Mars, myself.

John Carter and the Giant of Mars was originally published in 1940 Skeleton Men of Jupiter was originally published in 1943 I'm sure both copyrights were renewed. They're available at the Australian Project Gutenberg, but not at the US site. Last edited by cromag; 11-29-2014 at 05:46 AM. |

The problems I had were with Disney's vision of "eye appeal." The main characters were horribly miscast, IMHO. Taylor Kitsch was just way too young to convincingly portray someone who has lived as long, and experienced as much, as John Carter. He also had a problem speaking loudly enough to be heard. About halfway through the movie, though, I think I figured it out -- I caught myself thinking "This isn't John Carter of Mars, this is Jack Sparrow of Mars." Lynn Collins did a better job as Dejah Thoris, but looking at her I couldn't shake the feeling that Disney really wanted a "Megan Fox-type (but less expensive)" for the role, and this was who they found. The CGI department did a pretty good job with the Tharks, but even these guys screamed "Disney!" They looked way too much like giant Jiminy Crickets (who, in fact, really should have had six legs!), and their faces looked like the faces that Disney used in the movie Dinosaur from 2000. They were too skinny and flimsy looking to fit with the Tharks that I'd imagined from reading the books. Anyway, it was fun, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it -- the library had it on DVD. Not everywhere. Mr Burroughs died in 1950, so his work won't under the public domain in "life+70" countries until 1st Jan 2021*

	* Unless that country has a "rule of the shorter term" clause in its copyright law, in which case some of Burroughs' work will be in the public domain. |

I have read about 80 ebooks in the last 20 months. I haven't read a single paper book. I find them too heavy, and I find turning the pages distracting. It's also not as immersive an experience. I will never read paper again now.
