In the United States, there is a $40 coupon available for the Kobo Aura. So it's $99. Just type in JUSTFORYOU in the coupon slot. The Kobo Glo is regular priced ($129), but they have refurbished units for $79. They did have refurbished Touches in the U.S. for $49, but I think they're sold out now.

One thing to consider about ebooks vs. books is that Gutenberg has hundreds of thousands of free ebooks in the public domain.

And Mobileread has a Library of over 50,000 free ebooks.

That is an exaggeration. We only have 31,093 eBooks and if you need a particular format we drop to less than 10,000. 8997 Kindle, 8872 Sony, 8896 ePub with over 2,000 of those in German and a about 4,000 more in other formats.

No, where did you get this from!?! They both use the pearl screen, I own both and they have similar contrast.

It is good that you posted here, the impressions that you gathered from youtube are dead wrong. The Kobo Glo has the better screen because it has better resolution and a light. If that is all that you want buy the Glo.

It doesn't matter that it is an older device. Ereader tech is pretty much stagnant. And the Kindle Basic is essentially what the even older (as compared to the Glo) Kindle Touch was but with a faster processor.

Now I personally prefer the Kindle Basic but screen wise there is no competition.

Dale

My mistake on the exaggeration.

We do have a lot of ebooks, however.

On the contrary, there have been drastic improvements in pixels density over the last year. Both the Kobo H2O and the Kindle Voyage have much higher resolution screens than the devices being compared in this thread, which makes a significant improvement in the appearance of the text.

What HarryT said.

The higher resolution allows darker as well as sharper text since a higher percentage of a characters pixels can be full black instead of a shade of gray. 265ish ppi for e-ink has only been available for a little over a year, 300ppi only the past few weeks.

That is irrelevant for comparing the Glo to the Kindle Basic. I'm obviously talking about the native contrast of the screen. Which is the same for both readers.

It also doesn't invalidate what I said, increasing the resolution of the screen is not an indication that ereader tech is evolving. It's not innovative. Bright saturated color, increasing the number of shades of the grayscale, improving the contrast of the screen... these things would indicate to me that Eink is not stagnant. They have not happened. Years have gone by and all we have to show for it is higher resolution screens, slightly better contrast, and poor washed out color.

If I compare the Kindle 3 to the Voyage I see almost the same contrast, slightly sharper fonts and that is pretty much it. Eink is stagnant.

Thank you so much for this post! I have just recently (this month) found myself in the market for a Glo at a $70 to $80 price point and only by googling did I find the refurbished ones. You have made my day!

I'd get the kobo for the more feature-rich software and the light. I've read the light at its lowest level is bright, but I couldnt use a frontlight in the dark no matter how dim it was.

It's true the Kindle will have the better contrast. But you can weighten the fonts on the kobo to compensate for that.

I've received a Glo recently so I can talk about this one (and how it compares to the Mini and Aura HD).
The resolution is fine as long as you don't make a direct comparison to the Aura HD or the Aura H2O (I've seen one in store, oh my!). I have to add that I really enjoy the Mini for reading out and about, so far the Glo is giving me the same experience, albeit a little bit bulkier

The contrast can be improved with the light on which leads me to my main worry: I one of those who find the minimum brightness too bright (for instance, when using the Aura HD in a dark room the brightness is set between 4% and 7%). Today I've installed the night mode hack on the Glo and I think that might be the way to fix this issue. I'll be able to talk more about that tomorrow.

Other than that I quite like this Glo. I reminds me of my beloved Mini (in my opinion its only flaw is its lack of light) and I don't worry carrying it everywhere (unlike the Aura HD).
