If you write in Word, making meticulous use of Heading and Paragraph Styles, the docx will drop into Calibre and convert to epub very cleanly. If you obey the rules in Word you can even have functioning linked footnotes!

This is only the same sort of structure awareness you'd need when composing directly in Sigil. But a much easier interface to work in.

I'm sorry but I don't understand the meaning of this sentence, and didn't find any Ctrl-H shortcut in the menus or documentation.

I prefer my add-in of course, but to each its own. Another bonus is that if you open the navigation window in Word next to the document, you can move complete chapters/sections around by moving the headers in another position. That is very useful for reorganization...

I think LO Writer has the same features that exaltedwombat cited for Word, and it can export DOCX.

But the same statement will apply to Writer as for Word, you must make meticulous use of Heading and Paragraph Styles - i.e. no tabs for horizontal spacing or newlines for vertical spacing etc.

If you don't like the Word/Writer way of doing things, have you considered Scrivener and/or Jutoh. Both are a lot more 'author' friendly than the two epub editors I know (this one and the calibre one), and both have versions for Linux.

Another alternative is the Atlantis Word Processor - which you might be able to run under WINE.

Fine. If it runs the software you need. That, after all, is what an operating system is FOR.

Thanks a lot for having pointing towards these programs. Scrivener especially seem to be a tremendous piece of work: I'm still going through the tutorials but it might be a real new way of work vs the 'ordinary' word processors; I might get rid of Freemind too.

@tosca30 - if you want any tips on using Scrivener, the Writers Corner forum might be a place to start

During the creative phase of writing almost anything would be better than a markup editor - they're more or less the 21st century equivalent of one of these babies:

I ran a slightly older model in High School. Ours had 3 Magazines, but not the stuff on the far Left.
