I was trying to slow down my buying and seven days later, return to find the price of a book has gone up by HK$100. Even travelling to Canada the price when converted back into HK dollars has still gone up by HK$33. In Hong Kong $33 is equivalent to three Filet O' Fish plus two ice cream cones. I guess I don't really need the book right at this mo...

Maybe they're saving it up for the US Thanksgiving/Black Friday week.

When does this event take place in the US? And it does make me wonder why Kobo would be beholden to it.

Only a few years ago, stores would open at 5am or 6am on Black Friday, to get a jump on the competition. Even then, some people would camp out in line to be there as soon as the stores opened. Then it became 3am, then midnight, and this year I saw an ad for a chain that'll be open from 5pm-1am on Thursday before reopening at about 6am or so on Friday. It's just insane, and retail workers are complaining that they're being cheated out of the holiday. They have a point. I paid $40 extra for a laptop that's slated to be $100 as a Black Friday deal, because (a) I got it with no hassle, (b) I'll have it almost a week earlier (I pick it up tomorrow), and (c) I won't have to watch the clock and be at the competing store at 6pm Thursday in hopes of snagging one there. I'd rather chill out with family and friends all day. |

Kobo just sent me an email to my former Sony accounts:
dis75last for 75% off a selected list of books, 1-time-use good until Dec 6th in Canada, US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, & South Africa. Save on these titles! (same link sent to both my Canadian & US accounts this time) I tested this in my regular Kobo account (the email said Save 75% on your first book and was sent to the accounts in which I'd never bought anything), and the discount applied successfully at checkout, though I didn't go through with the purchase just yet. It doesn't work on off-list books, even from the exact same author/series/publisher as a list book. There's some pretty good stuff in it this time around, and I'm definitely going to be using this one, as the coupon effectively reduces the prices on my target books to under $4. For the mystery fans, there's a few of Donna Leon's (SYKM) Commissioner Guido Brunetti series set in Venice, and #7 in James R. Benn's (SYKM) excellent Billy Boyle mystery/action series set during WWII, which I've been binge-reading and really enjoying (it comes with nice historical notes in the back from the author on RL stuff he incorporated into the cases; can be read kind of standalone-ish, since it's not a particularly continuity-heavy sort of series when it comes to the ongoing character developments and the actual cases are pretty self-contained), and in Canada, there's #3 in Ian Hamilton's (SYKM) fun investigative non-murder mystery adventures starring Ava Lee, Intrepid Globe-Trotting Stolen-Money-Recovering Forensic Accountant (though I'll note that this and other books in the series have previously discounted to $4.99 during Kobo's periodic weekend sales and you might want to wait for that; also, it really helps to read this series in order because there's a lot of character development built up over time). For the historical fantasy lovers in the audience, there's a volume of DAW author Jennifer Roberson's (ISFDB, Wikipedia) Robin Hood historical fantasy-ish series focused on Maid Marian (these have romantic elements in them, IIRC), and a Rosemary Sutcliff (ISFDB, Wikipedia). And for the Latin American literature lovers in the audience, there's a Julia Alvarez (Wikipedia) historical literary fiction novel which, according to Wikipedia, was nominated for 1994 National Book Critics Circle Award. It's going to be tough picking out which one of my top three choices I really want to get (probably the Alvarez; I think I may already have a paper copy of the Roberson, and I'm ![]() |
