If I'm expecting a "sword and sorcery" fantasy novel, but it turns out to be a paranormal fantasy novel (with little to no elements of sword & sorcery), that will influence my review.
I am not being obtuse, I am merely saying such a book doesn't need a subgenre label -- it needs the person who originally mislabeled it as a genre it manifestly is not, smacked in the face and fired. Then you can cross out the "Sci-Fi" part, and write on top "no it isn't, it's horror" and be happy.

Cool genres & sub-genres...

The fact that I dislike sub-genres doesn't alter the fact that they exist and that they are useful to some portion of the readers of books and/or the viewers of cinema.

Sheesh!!

I am just asking, what is the main focus? That is the genre.

And anyway, crossovers/multigenre aren't subgenres anyway.

Subgenres are a way of over-analysis.

Changing subjects.....

I never did my pre-Skin Game reread (and therefore haven't yet read Skin Game) . *covers ears as people howl in shock and horror; ducks any possible projectiles being hurled in my direction.

In fact, I've been in a reading slump for the last 6 months, and its weighing heavily on me.

Nothing is holding my attention at the moment, so I am obsessively organizing all of my ebooks via Calibre.

I want [read: need] a good, sink your teeth in, standalone novel. I really like Speculative Fiction. Fantasy is my favorite genre. Scifi is a distant second. I haven't been a big fan of horror since highschool, but I'm willing to give it another go.

Or maybe I just need to get away from my comfort zone altogether, and try something completely new/different. *shrug*

Either any book in The Dark Tower series, or Joyland, or Rose Madder, or Duma Key, or Hearts in Atlantis, or Needful Things by Stephen King

I remember loving Needful Things some 20+ years ago.

I'm staying away from series right now, but, Dark Tower has been on my "one of these days" list for a while. I've not read any of the others.

Which is why I said any book, it need not be read as a series.

Try romance then. There are many subgenres to choose from, too.

^ Lol.

But you'll never know what you may like. Some romantic suspense is pretty much straight up suspense/thriller, and some paranormal romance can totally be considered as UF.

Maybe a good mystery? Or try picking a book on your TBR list at random?

I don't mind Romance, per se, I just want to stay away from the really predictable, cheesy stuff, so I tend to avoid the genre altogether.. Although, I have taken advantage of a collecting a LOT of freebies from Amazon.

A friend of ours made a suggestion that has actually been on my wishlist for a long time now; I had completely forgotten about it.
So I've gone ahead and treated myself to The Golem and the Jinni!
