I abandoned Invasion a few years ago. It contained lots of action but also supernatural elements which I don't care to read so had to stop fairly early. I didn't notice such in the book's summary.

There are supernatural elements in pretty much all of Lackey's books.

I'm undecided as to whether I want to bother reading the next one. If I can remember the story in a month or two I'll read it. But next up is : The Year of the Warrior by Lars Walker. Something I got in a Baen Bundle back in November 2004. My last unread ebook from before December 2004! |

Just finished "Miss Marple's Final Cases", by Agatha Christie, originally published in 1979. This is a posthumously-published collection of six "Miss Marple" short stories, together with two other non-Marple stories. The title is rather misleading: these are not Miss Marple's "final" cases at all, but are simply a reprint of stories which had originally been published in magazines, many years earlier.
One of the stories which is presented here as a Miss Marple short story, "The Case of the Caretaker", was subsequently greatly expanded (with the same plot, but different character names) as the standalone novel "Endless Night". Very enjoyable, and thoroughly recommended. Last edited by HarryT; 11-18-2014 at 05:06 AM. |

Just finished "Sentinels of Fire" by P.T. Deutermann (recommended by apache) - an excellent novel about a destroyer in the radar picket at the Okinawa invasion.

A very readable fantasy set in historical 990s Norway. I think that perhaps I did read it around the time I bought it, but I'd forgotten the plot.
That was my 212th book of the year, and takes my page total to around 63,800. (Averaging just a little over 300 pages per book.) I'm not sure what to read next - whatever takes my fancy that's on my ebook reader on the way home tonight. |

I just finished Patrick Rothfuss' The Slow Regard of Silent Things, a non-series Kingkiller Chronicles novella about the character Auri. A delightful, if rather strange, little story that has no action, no villains, and no dialog at all. But totally enchanting none the less. If you're familiar with the series, I highly recommend it. (And there is an excellent Audible version read by the author.)
On a less satisfactory note, I started a new book by Catherine Asaro, Undercity, set in her Ruby Dynasty universe, and abandoned it after about 100 pages. Just not working for me at all. I think I've completely outgrown Ms. Asaro and this universe, and I'm not at all sure why I liked it in the first place. |

Finished One and two of Alison Noel's Immortals series, taking a break with a one off by Blake Charlton called Spellwright. It is unususal and slightly heavy going with such an unusual premise ( language/grammar makes magic) I haven't been to school for many years and such a lot of talk of grammar and conjunctions does my head in. it is a little predictable in the plotline too but the magic making through spellwrighting/writing makes for an unusual storyline which is just enough to keep me reading. ...Sticking with it ...but just. This one has slowed my reading down a bit so I won't get so many read this week but thats ok too. Next in line will be the final in the Repairman Jack series...so sad to see it end!

I finished Malice by John Gwynne, mentioned in previous post, a few days ago. A fairly generic epic fantasy with a nice line in sympathetic bad guys, but I enjoyed it and will continue with the series some time. The series is incomplete, and the book doesn't particularly stand alone, for those that care about those things.
Last night I finished Miss Zukas and the Library Murders by Jo Dereske, which I enjoyed, mainly for the lead character, Miss Zukas herself, who was great. I'd picked up book 4 in the series as a freebie ages ago, and despite having this first one in my wishlist ever since, its price never wavered. I couldn't bring myself to start at book 4 so I caved in and bought it. Next up is possibly The Grim Company by Luke Scull which is my Kindle Lending Library book this month. It's extremely likely to be another epic/heroic fantasy even if it's not this one. I'll probably be alternating fantasy and crime for the next few books. |

Next up: Professor Jameson's Interstellar Adventures #1 by Neil R. Jones. My oldest unread purchased ebook, bought in December 2004, but written long before that. I'm certain I read this in paper around 40 years ago, and it was old then. It will be interesting to see what I make of it now. |

Two more books completed:
The Web Between the Worlds by Charles Sheffield. The builder of the longest bridge in the world is commissioned by a reclusive billionaire to tackle a far greater challenge: building a "beanstalk" or orbital tower, which will connect the Earth directly to orbital space, and revolutionise the ease and cost of lifting materials into orbit. An excellent "Hard SF" novel which I bought from Baen in 2001. Problem at Pollensa Bay by Agatha Christie. Short story collection originally published in 1991 containing 2 Poirot short stories, 2 Parker Pyne stories, 2 Harley Quin stories, and 2 "standalone" stories. Very enjoyable, although I'd read several of the stories before. |
