If so, you can install MobileRead Package Installer, the new friendly neighborhood package installer.
Since NiLuJe says fw>=5.6.1 will not accept our update.bin's, this is necessary to reinstall hacks.

See which hacks still work. While you're at it, you may as well install everything from the snapshots, since they have installation feedback.

It is possible some things may need to be updated for the new firmware.

Wait, you say backdoorlock is still in place? You mean, you you relocked the door? I would think /etc/updater.conf would be part of the system update image...

Have you checked that it will still successfully block OTA updates, on fw5.6.1?

Yeah, just basically go through all the steps.

Install JB.
Upgrade.
JB should still be installed, and seems like MKK should be too.

1. Test Active Content.
   • KUAL. The Bridge To Everything.
   • I daresay Collections Manager, is SOL, until someone writes yet more fw adapters.
   • JBPatch might install, and the kindlet controller run, but there aren't really any patches (yet), so... pointless.
   • Not really a lot of kindlets out there.
2. Test MRPInstaller.
3. Try various hacks, and see if they work.
4. Report back on the success and failure of everything.

I never installed KUAL before on this device. I'll do that and try a couple of things and report back.

I need to know specific things you want me to install, other than KUAL, please. Point to the things and I'll go forward with them, one-by-one.

ETA - fwiw, I just tested one of my active content items and it still works so I would expect the same from KUAL.
ETA2 - KUAL works fine. Just need content. Let me look at what I had on my PW1 - I think I only had KOR.

Wait! So here's the thing... I installed the MR package and it shows up on KUAL as it should. I then copied over the screensavers hack and fonts hack to the root - correct versions for my PW2 - and went to KUAL to use the MR installer. Ran it but nothing seemed to happen and the packages were gone so I couldn't manually install them. What's up. Is it me or something else?

ETA - should I put the install files for the hacks in the mrpackages folder instead? I used the tar.xz instructions.

I daresay it worked. EDIT: Assuming you put them in the right place.

The snapshots have feedback that hasn't made its way into the main packages, but the best way is to restart and see if screenshots were installed.

There should be KUAL extension folders for both hacks, so try setting them up.

My mrpackages file folder is empty - is this right, and I put the packages in the root directory, not the mrpackages folder?

Here's the thing. After reboot everything looks the same, nothing showing in KUAL (keep in mind this is the first time I've installed the fonts hack and screensavers hack with KUAL, etc. I had it on my KK. Is that the way KUAL should look at this point - nothing except the MR package installer showing?

Font hack not installed, that I can see.

@pghaworth: If you put the packages in the root folder, fw 5.6.1 will wipe them mercilessly, as you experienced .

On the other hand, if you want to use MR Installer [which you kind of have to, right now, on FW >= 5.6.1 ^^], put them in the mrpackages folder (and, hopefully, that should keep them safe from the FW).

Note that, when you ran MR Installer with an empty mrpackages folder, you should have seen a "No MR Packages found" printed at the bottom of your screen...

Once I saw the mrpackages folder and nothing functioning after reboot, I copied the packages to the mrp folder and flew a bit blind. After reboot everything was there. I needed a little bit of hand-holding with the package installer, but in the end got by without.

You folks made my day! I had a blast, learned a lot, and hopefully helped in some small way.

Your MR installer is a thing of beauty, man. Seriously.
