I didn't mean to imply I was only willing to spend $3... that was more a joke. I'm new to this. The only ones I saw at first were $3.

I look forward to the RSC version you recommended. But from what I saw at Amazon the complete version is not available until Feb 2015. Is it out -now-? If so, where?

Thanks again.

As I mentioned, the RSC Shakespeare series is available in ebook form, and has all the usual footnotes, etc, that one would expect. But it costs a lot more than $3 .

I've googled, but can only find the complete works in paper form. Is it out in ebook form?

The individual plays are available in ebook form now. Not the complete works. I have the complete works RSC in paper form, and it has relatively little annotation: if you want detailed annotations, the individual plays are what you want to get.

This edition has some notes linked to a not very thorough glossary in the back. Just definitions, no notes on background or allusions. The defined words are underlined and you have to use the back button to return to the text. And many of the words would be in your kindle dictionary anyway.

No TOC as such. There's only an active in-book table of contents with each play having links to individual scenes at the beginning.

It might be worth $2.99 to someone.

If you're interested in seeing what the RSC Shakespeare looks like, here's a page from "Antony and Cleopatra", and the corresponding page of annotations that you go to when you tap one of the links. The number alongside each annotation is the number of the line in the scene (again, the same as the printed version). I should add that these screenshots are from "Kindle for PC" which has huge margins and line spacing! It looks a lot better on an eInk Kindle.

The annotations are identical to those in the printed text, BTW.

I was wrong in saying that the "Complete Works" doesn't have annotations: it has the same annotations that the individual plays have. What the "Complete Works" doesn't have is all the auxiliary material that's in the individual plays: essays on history, performance notes, and so on.

As a matter of interest, where did you see that an ebook edition of the RSC Complete Works is coming out in Feb? I'd be very interested in that, but I see no mention of it on amazon.co.uk.

Why do you want the complete works anyway? They can be extremely hard to read and some are, well, let's say not as good as others Of course, it's your choice. Just saying.

That is of course one advantage of ebooks. The hardback RSC "Complete Works", which I have, has 2486 pages (printed on very, very thin paper), and weighs about 10lb. The only practical way to read it is to put it on a table. Ebooks don't get heavier as the page count increases!

In the US, the Modern Library edition uses, I think, the RSC version. It will be available for download on February 25.

You're right, I wouldn't read them all. But if the ebook version is priced like the paper copy, I would only have to read about seven or eight to break even over the individual ebooks. The rest would be gravy .

If you just want the actual text of the plays, that's very true. Personally, though, I find the auxiliary material equally interesting. That's why I have the complete set of "Arden" Shakespeare paperbacks, which are, to my mind, the best printed editions around.

On a side note, it might be fun to listen to a play using TTS on the reader. Well, fun for a few minutes, anyway.

If you're not familiar with Shakespeare's language and poetry, I agree that the Arden editions are the best, I used these when a student; but if you just want the text you can find this in the MR library, divided into histories, comedies, etc.

I'm wondering who published the editions of the Shakespeare plays I had back in high school (in Ontario, Canada, about 35 years ago). The scripts were on the right pages, and notes were on the facing pages. They had hard covers with solid colours, and I remember that King Lear had a purple one. Does anyone around here remember anything about those editions? I'd like to know if the same editions are available now as ebooks.
