there exists a timestamp field that is not normally displayed 'last_modified', that gets updated anytime Calibre makes a change that affects that record (some are very minor) |

Since the thread is already resurrected...
Why not use tags in Calibre? Any book can have multiple tags, and the tags are only limited by your imagination. For example, I have a "Placeholder" tag for keeping track of books I don't have (say, a missing book in a series), a "Paper" tag for keeping track of my paper books, a "Wishlist" tag, as well as the usual suspects: fiction, non-fiction, cooking, poetry, etc. |

While there is an option to output to a device many like me prefer to save to an sd card for use on their devices. You can format the name under preferences -> saving books to disk. If you just want the title you can indicate that and save the book that way. For instance, I save my books that I want to take to my android using {author_sort:sublist(0,3,&)}/{series}{series_index:0>5.2f| | - }{title} - {authors:sublist(0,3, & )} This puts them in a folder with the author name and the book is named the series, series number and title followed by author. Use {author_sort:sublist(0,3,&)}/{series}{series_index:0>5.2f| | - }{title} to save to a folder with the author name and the book named series, series number title. If there is no series it is just the title. |

Save all books returned, make sure your template includes the {id} in case you have multiple author book combos also you can track changed authors. |
