Hmmm . . . . I haven't noticed that myself. Maybe it's because of where on the Internet I hang out.

What definitely seem to be more common recently are the premium (renowned authors/cooks/chefs and major cookbook publishing houses) cookbooks being marked down (many times way, way down).

Anyway, here's a freebie cookbook. Bacon is always a crowd-pleaser. Yum. I wish that I had some right now . . . .

How to Cook with Bacon: Delicious and Mouthwatering Bacon Recipes. By Tony James Miller. Rated 5 stars, but from only 4 reviews at the present moment. Digital list price $2.99; Kindle price now $0.00. 109 pages. Belle and Winsley Press. http://www.amazon.com/How-Cook-Bacon...+Bacon+Recipes.

Book Description
This Guide Will Help You:
• Learn how to cook different kinds of cuisines with Bacon
• How to make your favorite food taste even better with bacon
• Give your desserts a unique twist with bacon

Some of the kitchen-tested recipes for my bacon guide include:
• Bacon-wrapped avocados
• Delicious bacon-wrapped roast chicken
• Spinach and bacon salad
• Bacon and Apple Pie

Free Soup Cookbook

Just in time for the onset of winter in the northern hemisphere. Those of you in the southern hemisphere will be ready for winter with this cookbook in 6 months.

This ebook has just 1 review because it was published recently. However, author Joanna Slodownik's other cookbooks at Amazon have been rated very highly.

Soups! Creamy, Thick & Satisfying Soups that Fill You Up Without Increasing Your Waistline, Raising Your Blood Sugar or Cholesterol Levels, or Compromising Your Ethics. By Joanna Slodownik. Rated 5 stars, but from only 1 review at the present moment. Digital list price $3.99; Kindle price now $0.00. Green Reset Media, publisher. 135 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Satisfying-Inc...ng+Your+Ethics.

Book Description
Soup is a great standby that's easy to prepare, inexpensive, nourishing and satisfying. By learning the recipes in this book you'll be able to create your own healthful, delicious and easy-on-your-waistline soups like a pro--including those creamy creations that look like they've been made by a seasoned chef and contain a thousand calories per serving.

Your family and friends will be impressed by your skills, even those who are hard to please. What's important, you'll have full control over what goes into your body. I’m always shocked to see what ingredients you can find in pre-made canned soups: high-fructose corn syrup, unhealthy fats, excessive amounts of salt, and all kinds of cryptic ingredients with names that are impossible to pronounce.

The rich, creamy soups are especially guilty. With all the cream, butter, and flour that goes into them, the caloric content goes through the roof ....and ends up around your waist!

Making soup is easy! Simply choose from an endless selection of fresh ingredients and/or some pre-cooked ingredients, let the mixture bubble away for 20-30 minutes, and presto! You have created a delicious homemade soup with almost no effort.

You'll be saving money, too. Grocery stores and specialty shops charge premium for a “homemade” soup. You can easily make 3-4 times the amount for the same price… and then refrigerate or freeze it away for a busy day.

Soups can be served as a side dish, first course, or as a hearty main course. Most cooked meals I make at home center around soup. I tend to favor thick, chunky, meal-in-a-bowl soups that often look more like thick stews, primarily because I’m too lazy to make lots of different courses. Also, soup can be easily stored for later. I always have a pot of soup sitting in my fridge or freezer.

If you are one of the people who don't make soups very often, I hope the recipes and photos in this book will be an inspiration for you. Don't feel you cannot prepare the soup if you are missing one (or more) ingredients. Have fun experimenting with your recipes, using what's available in your kitchen, garden or grocery store!

Too late? Oh, I think that I remember that you are in the southern hemisphere somewhere. Well, you could move up here, couldn't you? ha

They sound interesting to me, too. And the photo on the cover was of a soup that looked sooooo delicious!

This one is very highly rated, and comes from a well-regarded specialty cookbook publisher (Shasta Press). Another reason: size. It's big, at 314 pages.

This 99-Cent Book Will Tell You Where to Get Great Southern Food and How to Make It.

That's the Southern United States Ma'am.

This looks like it's part travelogue (for Southern restaurants) and part cookbook. With me having been raised in the deep South on much of the food that this book describes, this book really piqued my interest. I had to buy it.

And what a deal at 99 cents!

The Southern Foodie: 100 Places to Eat in the South Before You Die (and the Recipes That Made Them Famous). By Chris Chamberlain. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 33 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $24.99; digital (list?) price $14.24; Kindle price now $0.99. HarperCollins Christian Publishing, publisher. 288 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Southern-Foodi...Them+Famous%29.

Book Description
Thirteen states, 100 chefs, and 134 recipes later, one thing is clear: the food of the American South tells a story that spans the distance from New Orleans to Louisville, Little Rock to Charleston, Nashville to Dallas, and every city in between. The Southern Foodie explores a hearty swath of the South’s culinary culture, following its roots and exploring its evolution in the region’s best restaurants.

Meet the people who are keeping the tradition alive and reinventing the flavors of the South. Swing on down to the Gulf Coast, and wade into a chef’s wonderland of fresh seafood and spicy heat. Check out the culinary creativity in the Carolinas, where you’ll find traditional smoked pork barbecue alongside Southern favorites made with fresh, local produce. Explore the restaurant kitchens of Atlanta and Nashville, where the chefs aren’t shy about fusing comfort food standards with international flair and unexpected techniques. Join Chris Chamberlain for access to the South’s best recipes and the kitchens where they were developed.

- Jalapeño-and-Cheese-Stuffed Grit Cakes from Mason’s Grill, Baton Rouge, LA
- Roasted Heirloom Pumpkin with Mulled Sorghum Glaze from Capitol Grille, Nashville, TN
- Country Ham Fritters from Proof on Main, Louisville, KY
- Blue Crab Cheesecake from Old Firehouse Restaurant, Hollywood, SC
- Apricot Fried Pies from Penguin Ed’s Bar-B-Q, Fayetteville, AR

The Southern Foodie shows you where the South eats and how to create those distinct flavors at home. You’re sure to rediscover old favorites and get a closer look at the delicious new traditions in Southern cuisine.
