Moving Kindle
I just got hold of a new 4 GB PW and will sell on my 1 year old 2 GB one. I have a lot of illustration heavy books and will relish the duplication, which is more of a quadra...thingy, as most of the 2 gig is firmware anyway.
So, my question is how do I best go about it? * I use calibre. * Very few of my books are actually from Amazon and in their cloud, which I do not actively use. I just get their device, because I like it best (but sabotage their subtle ploy of drawing me into their eco-system ![]() Is it ok, if I just copy the whole document folder from PW I to PW II? Would that ensure I get my notes and highlights, and the vocabulary list thingy? Would it be best -- or is it totally irrelevant -- to register PW II to Amazon while PW I is still registered and then go wifi with both so as to enable some syncing vodoo (I'm wildly guessing here)? I'd actually prefer unregistering one before registering the other, so as to keep the things name and email addy. If you have been down that path or have total insight into the internal intricacies of said eco-system please do chime in. Hendrik says ta! |

All annotations are contained in the {book-filename-minus-ext}.sdr subfolders.
The only thing that will mess up when you transfer, is that any Amazon-DRMed books will still be locked to the old ID, and you cannot read them. The vocabulary list thing is totally different, and is in a database somewhere, I forget where. EDIT: It is in [userstore]/system/vocabulary/vocab.db Just copy that across as well. If your books are DRM-free then yes, just copying the entire contents of the "documents" folder from one device to the other will work fine.

I moved from a PW to a Voyage and you can rename your kindle email address to whatever you want (as long as it isn't taken) as far as I could tell. So you could deactivate one and then register the other.

Is everything in Calibre with the DRM infection removed. If so why not just download straight to the new device from Calibre.

Thanks, Harry. I hadn't considered this. If speed is a consideration it could of course save significant time.

It took me two whole days to load 1800-odd books from Calibre onto my Voyage. The main factor was that I was selecting books a few at a time in Calibre, and sending them to the Voyage, and Calibre was doing its "Send metadata" operation after each small batch, which was taking about 30-40s each time. There are better ways to do it (mark all the books and send them in one batch, for example), but if you simply want to duplicate the contents of one Kindle onto another, copying the "documents" folder is definitely the way to do it.

It is more important that the manual transfer via File Browser will replicate all annotations -- calibre won't.
The OP would like to see them transfer over. |

That sounds very good, thank you.
I will proceed with the copying. |
