By "old lightless Kindle," do you mean a non-touch Kindle 4 with buttons? If so, I've noticed that new, lighted OEM cases for these have started showing up on eBay for about $20 (including s/h). That might be a decent "stop-gap" solution.

Or ... maybe you got lucky. Personally, if I was paying $200 for a Kindle, I sure wouldn't accept a "seconds" screen.

recentros thanks for the reply with actual advice instead of smug comments.

Apparently wanting a screen that is not splotchy to everyone who saw it, or half functional, or broken out of the box is "sensitive to displays" and I should "just stick to paper books". All the Voyages I have seen in person have a clearly orange top and a blue bottom...not a little...something everyone else noticed...and clearly an issue. The idea that wanting something that isn't defective to anyone who sees it is "expecting perfection and unrealistic" or "deserved due to complaining" is absurd. I thought there would be more serious discussion in this community but I guess that sort of arrogant demeanor shouldn't surprise me on the internet...[Derogatory language deleted - MODERATOR]. It really turned me off to this forum.

I have no problem wih people wanting their money's worth.

I simply do not believe it is logical to try predicting which one you will get. It would require prophecy.

I don't really hold of offering placebo suggestions.

There is no way of improving your chances of getting a good screen...other than praying.
It's luck of the draw.

Or just wait a few months and see if they work any bugs out of the Voyage.
I got a God one and I can tell you it is so worth it.

For what it's worth, I purchased my first Kindle (a PW) a year ago, after seeing the writing on the wall regarding Sony's possible future.

Went to the local BestBuy and inspected it in the car with the expectation of immediately returning it, after reading about the screen troubles many here were having. I was prepared to return several that day until I got one I was satisfied with.

My first one was a charm, and I'm still happily using it daily a year later.

Don't be discouraged. Do your research, find one you like, and enjoy.

With all due respect, how would you expect that we answer? Obviously, the only possible way "to get a good Voyage/PW the first time" would be for you to go to a retailer and personally inspect every unit until you find one you like. But I hope you don't need us [Derogatory language deleted - MODERATOR] ...

Guys, why all the hate towards OP?

I'd second rcentros -- for a $200 Kindle I'd expect a device without flaws OOB and uneven colour temperature is definitely a flaw. It's a very valid question -- maybe there's a retailer which got a good batch or which is very good with returns on the spot or whatever.

PS. There's nothing wrong with not replying to a thread if you have nothing productive to contribute.

There's no hate, but it is foolish to persist with something if you've determined that it doesn't meet your requirements.

All Voyages have a screen with a brightness/colour gradient, but most people either don't see it at all (including me), or aren't concerned by it. Look at the Voyage reviews on "amazon.co.uk": 67 reviews, 62 of which are very positive (4.5 star overall rating). Of the 5 non-positive ones, only one of them is critical of the screen, the others being a faulty power button, poor battery life, etc. The vast majority of the reviews, on the other hand, comment on how excellent the screen is.

Clearly, therefore, the overwhelming majority of people are very happy indeed with the screen; the OP is mistaken in saying that the screen is "defective to anyone who sees it". If you are one of the small minority who is sensitive to the colour gradient, then don't torture yourself with it: the screen isn't going to change, and there are plenty of other fish in the sea.

You are reiterating the OPs mistake, coming to the bizarre conclusion that we disapprove of wanting a good screen. There is nothing wrong with wanting to get what you paid for, and no one has said there is.

To help you with your confusion:
Nobody can know whether theirs will be of the unlucky few, in the absense of a working crystal ball and/or prophetic visions. Hence my advice for prayer.
Hence also my assumption the thread was a joke, and the ensuing levity on my part (and possibly the preceding and succeeding levity on others' parts).

Thank you at least for not being rude in your confusion. (Unlike the OP, who is less likely to get politeness after an attitude like that.)

Quote:

I feel I was very productive, having given the only even marginally useful suggestion which is prayer. (placebos aren't useful suggestions)

No the OP is NOT mistaken. Who do you think you are? Everyone who saw the ones I am talking about knew they were defective. You seem to have a history of smug and argumentative comments here. You seem to have some need to dismiss things you find "silly" and passively aggressively insult people. It's not admirable or respectable. Perhaps after 8 years on an internet forum you need to take a break.

Get your last word in or don't. I don't really care as I am done with this place because I am tired of seeing that Dalek pop up knowing it's going to be a know it all shitty comment.

Not everyone who sees a Voyage screen thinks they are defective. Afterall the OP wanted a sure fire way to get a non defective screen first time around, so surely the OP accepts some screens are not defective.

In defence of all the smug comments your question was a bit ridiculous. You may as well have asked about how to improve your chances of winning the lottery. Not that getting a good Kindle has the same odds of winning the lottery but somehow believing that you can somehow magically improve your odds is just as pointless.

He probably thinks he is a moderator.
Clearly, someone must've thought he is useful enough to have an opinion worth caring about.

I cannot comment on HarryT's smugly argumentative history of, um, arguing with you...
I do note that as you say, internet forum, what do you expect?

It could perhaps be said HarryT is too firm in his opinions once he is convinced of its truth.
I am sure he wouldn't be the only one, it is human nature.

It happens to be I disagree with HarryT, people have every right to want a perfect screen and I do not automatically assume everyone is a whiner as opposed to someone who got a bad screen.

Your question was still silly, insomuch as it expects prophecy, cf. lottery tickets (above); perhaps if you ask a better question you will find more sympathy.
Having a more cheerful outlook about it might help too -- if you are determined to be the victim, there is not a lot we can do to change your mind.

Not really. There was one good answer, buy from a local retailer and test the screen in the parking lot -- keep exchanging them until you get a good one. Unfortunately, the OP may not have a local dealer.
