Moving from the K3 to the Voyage

I've had a set workflow for nearly 4 years now. I upload new books to Calibre (which convert during the upload and strip DRM), then I email the book to my K3 from within Calibre using my Amazon Kindle email. It has worked wonderfully for the past 4 years.

Looking to move to the Voyage, I have a couple of questions. Will the same workflow still be viable? I've long since forgotten the details of how I set all that up.

In addition, I may be totally rebuilding my PC soon and will have to reinstall Calibre, etc. Guess I'll have to figure it all out again as I go along.

I have my K3 set up with folders containing books read, books to be read, etc. Will it be a simple process to move that over to the new Voyage? I imagine the process will be similar to those moving from the K3 to the PW series. Was the transition easy and logical?

Yes the first part of your process the emailing books to Amazon will work as before.

The folders may be a bigger issue. Voyage uses cloud collections, it may be that when you connect for the first time those folders you currently have on your K3 will sync but I don't know, and you may get folders you've deleted sync as well, needless to say I expect your 'll have some sorting out to do.

Cloud Collections is a pain if you side load books, due to numerous and constant pop up messages, but they work perfectly with any books you email to Amazon.

You can't transfer books through so any books currently on your KK will need to be redownloaded from the Amazon Cloud.

Thanks Josieb1. Do you know if Kindle management is still via the Kindle interface or if I can do a better/faster job if the Voyage is connected to my PC? Managing my books on the K3 is rather cumbersome.

For collections you can't do anything by the pc now, all collections are managed on the kindle, or a kindle app. As far as I know the Kindle Touch was the last kindle that could have it's collections managed by a pc.

A Kindle app on a tablet is faster and easier than the kindle. The beauty of cloud collections is the same set of collections appear on all devices and kindle apps, android or apple, so you can create collections on an app and the same collection will appear on your Kindle. The books will be grey'd out if they haven't been downloaded to the kindle, but that's all you'll need to do, download the books .

No, the Kindle Touch was the first one that could NOT.

That is, without the really easy hack that allowed you to run Collections Manager kindlet (for >=K5).

It is all handled by calibre's [GUI Plugin] Kindle Collections, which works with every Kindle from the Kindle 2 and onward. See the plugin thread for details.

The only difficulty is that as the Voyage has not yet been released, we do not know if a jailbreak will be discovered. Compounding the problem is that Amazon "fixed" the current one on fw>=5.4.5 .

Thanks for clarifying eschwartz, I only ever used the Collections Manager on my KK so I wasn't aware I just knew we had to manage collections through the Kindle or a Kindle app for the Paperwhite, I guess it will be the same for the Voyage

Additionally, if you have any samples on your device only, you'll want to back those up to a PC and then move them to the new device. They have no DRM, so it's just a copy/paste job.

You sure? I just uploaded a sample from my K4 into Calibre earlier today. Calibre itself cannot open it in the builtin viewer. Doesn't that imply that there is DRM on it? (maybe it doesn't imply that?)

I'm preparing to go from my K4s to a KVoyage, so I want the same sort of info.

(A) What is the difference between the K4's "amazon is holding the books, so I only have to carry 200 or so on the Kindle" and the Paperwhite's and the Voyage's "cloud" concept?

(B) Collections in the cloud - are you saying the Kindle reading app on my (iphone,iPad) could start putting things into "cloud" collections now? Even though my K4 apparently doesn't see the "cloud" the same way (or, as in (A) is it a wholly different cloud?) -unclear on the concept!

(C) can the Kindle Cloud reader on my Mac do the same collection building? Keypad and mouse might be even easier....

Although it is unintuitive, a sample will have DRM if the book itself does.

A pretty name.

Yes, the apps are updated with Cloud Collections and the K4 is not.

Kindle Cloud Reader in the browser is a crapshoot.

Kindle for Mac -- I don't think the desktop apps were updated with Cloud Collections (I could be wrong.)

When did that change? Samples never used to have DRM

That surprises me too. Last time I purchased a kindle (2010), I copied all my samples to my computer and side-loaded them onto the new one.

No, if your using an official kindle app the apps have Cloud Collections, they should recreate from the Cloud on the latest Kindles (including the Fires) it's the older Kindle e-ink readers (pre Paperwhite) that don't.
