I was a book worm from infancy, seriously. My parents never discouraged my voracious need for reading but they did like a set bedtime, so yeah, I read under the covers many a night after lights out time. Truthfully they probably knew but let me get away with it, LOL!

Has having the Kindle made a big difference in the number of books that you read now? Are you trying out various genres or is there one particular one you are concentrating on?

i chose reading under the covers, which i did do as a child.

but my parents were super pro-reading - one of them read to my sister and me every single night, at least one chapter or two if we were lucky. and they took us to the library regularly from the time i was 5 and my sister younger, letting us take our time to choose what we wanted, although always willing to help with the choices if we wanted. they also bought books for us that suited our personalities, as well as letting us choose our own books.

I don't know about iaredam but I read more than ever before I think since I got my Kindle. I read a lot of fan fics in the Harry Potter world many of which I made in Calibre. I do think I have gotten more books that I might not have bought in paper due to lack of $ and space since then though too. Free book offers are a great bonus with ebooks.

My parents both encouraged me to read and my mother was the primary school librarian/teacher at my primary school.

All of the children were big readers except my brother whose interest seemed to fizzle out when he got older. My father doesn't read much, but he's been reading a few books here and there since he's retired. I'm buying him Starship Troopers for Christmas as I think he'd really like that novel.

I no longer differentiate between books and ereaders. Whether it is paper or electronic hardware it is my book to me.

The first year that I had the Kindle I read around 100 books. I've been averaging around the same per year since. I've been mainly reading fantasy and science fiction. I'm open to any genre, as long as it has a good story.

I too need an "encouraged to read" category for the poll. My mother gave me books before I even learned to read. Had a cardboard box full of them. My older sisters would read them to me, so naturally I couldn't wait to read on my own. As a teenager I switched to non-fiction and the public library. Since getting my first ereader 5 years ago, have rediscovered fiction and have been reading 100+ books a year (mostly mysteries).

I did not have to sneak in reading time. My parents were not avid readers but they encouraged me to read as much and as often as I wanted. I don't think they thought I read either too much or not enough; my reading didn't get in the way of anything that I had to do or anything we did as a family. They never told me I couldn't read and I don't remember ever being sneaky about my reading. I did read in bed, but never with my head under the covers.

On the other hand, I am constantly telling my oldest son to stop reading. (Not that he reads too much, but often at inappropriate times.) I don't think he sneaks reading time, as I don't really restrict him except for mealtimes and other activities where I expect him to be engaged with other people. Although I guess I also wouldn't know since the whole point of "sneaking" is to hide from me. LOL

I didn't have flashlight where I grew up. Very few books. At night there was nothing to do but go to sleep.

I'd read during study hall. I can remember having to look up every now and then to make sure I hadn't been so involved in the story that I didn't hear the bell at the end of the period.
