Well that sounds really promising. I recall having a blast with tweaking Calibre to make the Sony eat my s**t the way I wanted it to. The guys behind Calibre and its plugins are the real inventors around ereading, if you ask me. Without them, I'd never have reached a comfy zone for reading outside paper^^

I just felt my verbosely writing might seem a bit awkward to you natives here, therefore my apology. And yes, same here with natives speaking a, ehm, "reduced" version of what was formerly know as German language. Do you know the movie "Idiocracy"? It's a stupid, hilarious one, but there are certain messages it just got right

I can imagine. The name alone is quite telling.

In general, you will find MobileRead quite accepting of whatever verbosity we see from foreigners. (We have many here.) And of course it helps when someone's profile gives their country.
We know what is important -- (has undertones of intelligence, cross-language compatible...)

I will wait for the PocketBook InkPad and have a look at the Touch Lux 2 and Ultra, as soon as their new FW is rolled out. In the meantime, I will toy with Calibre and Kindle until the Voyage is available over here AND jailbreakable.
If Pocketbook again turns out to have displays inferior to my PRS-T2, I will go the Kindle route... Thanks again for your insight and (hehe) please be prepared for more geek talk, should I go Kindle...

There are a variety of people who do, all of whom would be delighted to provide insight into whatever questions you have.

It may not be a quick process, but in the end I don't recall any specific cases of people not getting looked after in the end.

My plan is to rebuild the Sony comfort and find some new features I DIDN'T have before. Heck, if I end up happy with Kindle, I might even slaughter a paperwhite and try to colour the leds with a filter if that's possible. I love waaarm reading light and always warm-toned the MightyLights for my Sony. I never heard of someone doing something like that, but maybe it's possible after all...

Regarding your support question: I wouldn't mind that since we have a dealer's warranty. If that applies in your country, too, you're better off with that than with any of the manufacturers'. At least that's a point where Sony is no better than the rest ;-)

I'll come back here to share the Kobo experience. The only thing is that I plan to order it from UK and have it sent to a friend that lives there. He's currently traveling around though so I have to wait until the end of November/early December. That unless H2O comes in our stores earlier than that. And you are right about the dealer's warranty. I was mostly asking for future references, basically to see if it's actually a good idea to move to Kobo altogether or browse around.

That's good to know, thank you. I know most cases of unhappy customers have to do with user problem rather than device issue, but it's good that they're there to help even if it takes more time.

The thing with Kobo CS is that they will take care of the problem eventually, but you have to STAY ON THEM. Keep contacting them until they fix whatever problem you have.

DON'T believe them when they say you'll hear from 'Tier 2' within 48 hours. No living human has ever heard from 'Tier 2.' Just keep plugging away.

One thing still irritates me. In all posts regarding battery life, people say they have to turn off the WiFi in order to have more than a week?!?

Someone please tell me this isn't true anymore

On the Sony, the Wifi stays on all the time and the device puts it to sleep after a couple of minutes. It automatically wakes it and establishes connection whenever I hit "Wikipedia" in a book. It lasts weeks like this and I charge it every other months or less, depending on wether I use WiFi often or not.
I was thinking 3G+WiFi but when I have to turn that on and off manually all the time, it would feel like stone age to me...

Update2: I also opened an interesting thread about hardware-hacking the PW (or any frontlit reader) to colour the front light amber/orange for better night-reading. Any crazy ideas welcome

Edit: I just figured that the hack to get rid of the margins is out of development. That's one bummer too much for me. Forced margins on a 6" display, seriously? That's too much idiocracy for me.

I thought I had found the perfect Sony replacement. I was willing to buy that frankenreader, JB it in order to give it a slight chance of keeping up with a Sony (headstart even, since Kindle is the only one to allow for buying several dictionaries and use them as such), and tear it down to make the frontlight less unhealthy and uncomfortable for night reading. It would have been the perfect ereader for me, though not out of the box...

Can someone please build an ereader that's capable of replacing a 3,5yrs old Sony? Double the price for christ's sake, just DO it!

I usually just leave the WiFi on when I first need it, until I put it away. As long as the WiFi is not on overnight, no huge drain. (It will regularly poll Amazon servers for updates I guess.)
It helps that the Wikipedia popup has a button to turn on the WiFi if needed.

JBPatch I believe can be installed on all the newer models. The individual patches are crowdsourced and if someone wants to write one...
I believe the margins one for the PW has been kept up to date. (But not the Wiki references? ) Now, I personally am out of luck with my Kindle Touch...

No one else is offering good competition, that's the problem.
