Hi, James. I'm sending you a link to a N289 uSD Card image. It is compressed in a .zip file to reduce the size from 1.84GB to 504MB. The firmware in the image is 1.9.11 though 1.9.12 does work on my Kobo Wifi (both Kobo synced and sideloaded ebooks). I did the reset before creating the image so it will come up with an updating as 1.9.11 is written over the factory firmware.

Could somebody PM to me the right image file?

My wife has a N647 model that currently has v1.9 firmware dated March 29, 2011. Does that model run different firmware, and if so, will it get trashed the moment it gets a forced update to 1.9.12?
I have just seen a claim that the wrong time on the device can cause the no books problem. The claim was that the WiFi can reset the time to a default (I assume 1970) and won't show books from what it considers to be the future. If this is booting, can you check the time?

It didn't matter if the time was set correctly or left at the factory reset default (the default date on 1.9.12 version appears to be Jan 1, 2013), it didn't work.

Thanks for that. I'm downloading the file at the moment, so I'll see how it goes.

The download will take some time as we are on a shared bandwidth cellphone type internet connection in rural Nova Scotia. Lately our connection speeds haven't been much better than dial-up speeds.

OK, that's what I was expecting and thanks for checking. I'll ask the next person who has this problem in case the date has somehow been set earlier than 2013.

It's running at between 80 and 140 KB/sec download speed. In an hour, I've downloaded 440MB of the 558MB zipped N289 image file.

That worked a treat.

Copied the image file to a spare 2GB uSD card, and my N289 Kobo appears to be running normally with 1.9.11.

I'll try doing an update to 1.9.12 and if that works OK, I'll create a new image file from that. If it fails, I'll revert to 1.9.11.

23 minutes to download the 1.9.12 update on my slow connection, but the update appears to have worked.

Did a factory reset, and it does the "updating software" thing and comes up showing 1.9.12.

I'll grab an image, zip it up, and upload it to my server.

Hi,

I'm looking for the firmware image for the N647.

Someone was nice enough to send me a link to a zip file already, but when I try to unzip the file I get a "the archive is either an unknown format or damaged" message.

Thanks.

Sorry, I automatically sent the link again without properly reading your post.

The file appears to be OK. I have just downloaded it myself and tested it with no errors. I would suggest downloading it again.

Thanks!

I downloaded it again today, and it worked.

For anyone having the same problem as me:

I had similar symptoms to the ones listed on the first page of this thread, except when I connected the kobo to my desktop, it was as if the card was empty, it didn't show folders or anything.

But once I got the firmware image, I used Win32 imager to put it on the internal micro sd card and it seems to be working fine now.

Glad you got it working...still amazes me that Kobo is still pushing this update with all the problems it causes...

When I got my N289 running again, I used a replacement 2GB uSD card.

My original Kobo 2GB uSD card has been left intact with the "updated" firmware that bricked my N289. I've raised a support ticket with Kobo about their 1.9.12 upgrade killing my Kobo. I'll see what their response is.

The original issue was with the 1.9.11 update, the 1.9.12 update was recent -- the KoboRoot.tgz file was created on 2014-Oct-16 -- and, I suspect, supposed to fix the issues that caused 1.9.11 to toast some Kobo WiFi's and possibly issues with syncing ebooks from Kobo's site that have been commented on.

AFAIK, My Kobo never got the 1.9.11 update and it was the 1.9.12 update that bricked it.
