All that being said, in my experience all the photos I've taken exaggerate the lighting gradient. I find them helpful for identifying that the issue exists, and making comparisons between units in the same photo, but none of the photos I've taken accurately represent what I see in real world use.

I imagine that if I put my iPad Air or iPhone through the same process whatever inconsistencies in the screen would start to show up. And that's why I'm not ;-)
I've just put GIMP's eyedropper to the picture, trying to pick the exact same pixels within the middle of the original and pasted lightbulbs.

If the bottom one is an exact 1 to 1 copy of the top one, without any other edits to the picture, the eyedropper should return the exact same value for both (or at least, nearly identical), regardless of what I'm seeing.

It doesn't. The lower pasted part is decidedly more yellow than the top one, not only to my eye, but only to the eyedropper.

What could be causing this?

ETA - on the subject of floaters, I have them and I have them all the time. I am never not aware of them. I do work that calls for a high level of visual concentration, along with photography, which calls for the same, and the floaters, ever present, are terrible and distracting until they float out of view. Wish I could go buy two new eyeballs.
Well I did buy two new lenses (cataract surgery) and the floaters are STILL there

Probably JPEG compression, or whatever compression the hosting site uses for photo storage. I just did a very simple copy/paste in the basic Mac image viewer.

When I get to my desk I'll upload the original image to Dropbox and post the link if you'd like to take a closer look.

I'd love to see the originals

While I can fully understand that one can't see anything wrong with the original, and then suddenly see a great color difference between the top and bottom when directly comparing them by copy/pasting a part of one into the other, I just can't accept that the eyedropper shows such a large difference between the original and copied parts.

I shall see what I see, but the eyedropper can't lie.

An oft quoted image is this one (I also used it to illustrate this same point in the PW1 thread two years ago):

While the fields A and B look like they are miles apart, the one dark grey and the other light, the eyedropper will tell you that they are in fact the same color (#777777).

Therefore, after you said that you copy/pasted the part, I was expecting them to be exactly the same, despite what I was seeing, but obviously, they are actually different for whatever reason.

What you see is not what you get...

LOL! I have new contacts, combined with glasses, and the dang things are STILL there for me, too. One's floating by as I type...

I don't think anything short of new eyeballs will handle it.

Look at the RGB values for pixel #1 and #2 and you will see that they are almost identical. I am sure that those two icons is copy/paste from top of the third screen.

I'm not saying anyone is lying, if you might be thinking that

Still, I'd like to take a look at the originals myself, doing the copy/paste myself and actually comparing the original image with the new one. I'd like to find out where the difference comes from.

I'm not saying that either I just checked myself because I was curious. I have almost perfect PW2. But if I look very closely I see that bottom and top of the screen is brighter than middle part. I never notice that while reading.
Those screens are definitly gradient, but I don't think that will bother me while reading. I rarely read in dark anyway.

I consider my PW2s to be near perfect as well. I can still see a 1/2" +/- gradient difference at the bottom due to the lights, but I choose to deal with it and get on.

My KV, OTOH, was a 2.5" to 3" gradient that I was unable to abide, no matter what. The bottom 2/3 of the screen was flawless and beautiful, even right at the lights. At the top, for the first 1/3 of the screen it was orange-yellowish, murky/partially opaque. Side-by-side with a PW2 2014, my choice was obvious. It was hard to let the KV go, but the screen was the ultimate decider.

I'm reading that thread from post #1 and I still don't know if I should cancel my KV order or not

Delivery date is 12. December so I have plenty time to decide

You might be one of two types - one who notices or one who does not notice. And your Voyage might be one of two types - one that has it or one that doesn't. If I were you I'd let my order ride and judge when it finally comes - if you feel you can wait.

Me, I'm waiting for the KV2. If that's a disappointment then I'm probably going with a Kobo. All I'm asking for is a nice, even, clear screen. Doesn't seem like a lot. I have the luxury of time with my PW2 2014 in my hands. YMMV

Open the image in gimp, or the display utility from ImageMagick, or any other application that can display pixel components and "see" for yourself,

Can the basic mac image viewer save as PNG? That would avoid additional artifacts And the copy/paste should be after any resizing.
