That really is terrible luck, Pangolin - you have my sympathies. I agree with Harry, stomp your feet a bit and see if you can get a replacement sooner. It is, after all, their fault, not yours!

Anyway, my Kindle Voyage arrived safe and sound yesterday (thankfully!), so I've been playing with it yesterday and today. I've also paired it with this Incipio case (which arrived today).

The case is a bit pricey for what it is, but the Voyage really does fit into it securely, and the look and feel of it is very nice. The power button cover in the back of the case is a nice touch, but you do have to push a bit harder to get the Kindle to turn off. I would've much preferred the auto-sleep option and it's a bit baffling that Incipio didn't go for this, to be honest. However, as this case may only be a stand-in until I cave and order an Oberon Design one (which does do the auto-sleep thing, apparently), I'm not too upset; I just wish the Oberon Design shipping costs weren't so high, otherwise I'd've gone straight to them in the first place!

I can, however, say that the Voyage itself is fantastic. I did a side-by-side comparison with my Paperwhite, and the difference is really marked. The Voyage's screen is just so much nicer, clearer and even more like the printed page than ever before. Whether HarryT and I are not particularly fussy about our screens, I do not know , but I can say that I see nothing wrong with mine. It's magnificent.

I also love the haptic feedback on the page turn buttons, and the fact that the screen is flush with the bezel is very pleasing on the eye. I don't know why the latter is true, but to me it just looks more...correct. And yes, I'm aware of how odd that sounds

I have only two minor gripes - one is the apparently inescapable insistence of putting recommendations for books on the first page if you are in Cover View. I do not want this feature, and was disappointed to find it here. If you prefer List View, you have no problems, but otherwise you're out of luck, unless you enable the parental controls by restricting access to the Kindle Store. This solves the problem immediately, but is rather clunky as workarounds go. I side-load all of my books (having sent them to Calibre first), so not being able to browse the Kindle store on a whim through my Voyage isn't exactly a deal-breaker for me; some of you may feel differently, however, and I know of no other workaround in this instance - do please correct me if I'm wrong, though!

EDIT: This is totally unnecessary (see responses below)!

The second minor gripe is actually a technical problem at my end, I think; none of my 381 books appear to have page numbers (only the location is displayed at the bottom of the screen). Has something gone wrong when I've copied them over from Calibre? They all had page numbers on my Paperwhite! If anyone knows how to correct this, can they let me know? I'm really hoping that I won't have to copy all my books over again, but I will do if I have to.

EDIT: ...and this is extremely easy to fix. Again, see responses below. I really wasn't having a good day here, was I?

In summary? Kudos, Amazon - this is the king of e-readers, IMO. I can't recommend it highly enough.

You can turn off recomendations, just go to settings/device options.

I simply refuse to believe that option was in settings when I looked yesterday (and today, in fact!). I went through all of the options screens looking for it...can't believe I managed to miss it!

Thanks very much, Josie, much appreciated

Hey, don't suppose you can help with my page number issue, can you??

While reading the book, select "Reading Progress" from the menu. Is "Page in book" shown as one of the options?

I'm coming from 18 months with a Kobo Aura. Liking the screen on the Voyage, and the page turn 'buttons'. Not liking the limited font choice but have found a happy font/size combination. Just discovered that the remaining time/page no. info on the bottom can be changed and even switched off completely by tapping it! Having the buttons means I don't tap on the list of books to scroll through and inadvertently open a book I didn't want to. Still dithering about a case.

Yes. And as I say tapping on the info line scrolls through the options, which is a new one on me.

I'd suggest at least skimming through the User Guide. There are various features of the interface that are explained there that aren't that easy to discover accidentally. Eg a friend of mine had been using a Kindle for 6 months without realising that you could jump to any page on the home screen directly by tapping the page indicator in the bottom right corner.

Ah <looks suitably shamefaced>

I should clarify my review above, therefore, to point out that I have no minor gripes with the Voyage, then

Seriously, Harry, thanks for pointing this out - and your suggestion about the Kindle User Guide is a good one, too, which I will endeavour to remember in future!

The flip cover design me didn't worry as I always folded the front cover behind the device with the other design too.

I'm not fully convinced about the stand functionality yet, but the cover is very nice and the design is so much better than previous ones if you want the option of reading with or without the case.

Thanks Harry, did that today, a bit reluctantly because I can't help feeling sorry for the guy on the other end of line who is just trying to do their best. Anyhoo, he swore absolutely that no 3G models will be available in the UK until december 16th.

I did get a tad stroppy and ask for a reduction and they gave me 30 quid off.

I have a great PW 2 (only upgrading for the 3G and contrast) so, first world probs and all..

And yeah, its the first time I've ever had that, so their record is pretty good.

I just feel sorry for Mr Symonds of Gwynedd, waiting patiently for his CDs. My father, who took delivery, just called him to see if he had my Kindle and told the guy we'd bung them in the post; But no, they have to go back to amazon with a return form for my Voyage - which somehow seems like adding insult to injury! I told Amazon to just send out the CDs again to the guy. I can't get them back to Amazon until 15th Nov. A long wait for Mr Symonds. Longer wait for me!

Now if this was fiction I could make a soppy story about strangers being bought together thanks to our consumption patterns.....

It's an extremely useful facility. I have my books sorted by author and if, for example, I want to jump to the start of my Agatha Christie books, I just tap the page indicator, and type in "CHR", then hit the "Go" button.
