L.A. Secret Police: Inside the LAPD Elite Spy Network by Mike Rothmiller & Ivan G. Goldman is an exposé of Exactly What It Says In The Title, written by one of the cops involved, originally out from Pocket Books in 1992 and updated with a new epilogue essay written by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist David Cay Johnston (Wikipedia). Rothmiller himself seems to be regularly invited by the media to speak on police-related issues, e.g. this article from last year's ABC 10 News (warning for auto-play video). This incredible non-fiction book rips the lid off the LAPD and exposes the reader to its dark underbelly of corruption during the reign of Chief Daryl Gates. L.A. cops ruined lives and reputations, inflicted mindless brutality, committed murder and engaged in massive cover-ups. In Los Angeles, police corruption was much more than unmarked envelopes stuffed with cash. It was a total corruption of power. For decades LAPD engaged in massive illegal spying and lied about it. Its spying targets included politicians, movie stars, professional athletes, news reporters and anyone wielding power or those of interest to Daryl Gates. Incredibly, the spying targets included a Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, a Secretary of Defense, a current Governor and the President of the United States. It all happened in Los Angeles. Detective Rothmiller is the modern-day Frank Serpico; he exposed the tentacles of corruption which reached to the highest levels within the LAPD and Washington D.C. It wasn’t long after that an assassin attempted to take his life. It was apparent to many that powerful forces wanted him silenced. Incredibly, in this book Detective Rothmiller names names! See why this book changed the LAPD and is required reading at many universities. As former Assistant United States Attorney Marvin Rudnick said, “Rothmiller was in a position to know. He did very sensitive work.” |

The first 2 books of Edmund Morris' Theodore Roosevelt Trilogy are currently on sale at Amazon. They can be downloaded for $1.99 each.
The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt (Theodore Roosevelt series Book 1) http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Theodore-...+edmund+morris Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time Thirty years ago, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Although Theodore Rex fully recounts TR’s years in the White House (1901–1909), The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt begins with a brilliant Prologue describing the President at the apex of his international prestige. That was on New Year’s Day, 1907, when TR, who had just won the Nobel Peace Prize, threw open the doors of the White House to the American people and shook 8,150 hands, more than any man before him. Morris re-creates the reception with such authentic detail that the reader gets almost as vivid an impression of TR as those who attended. One visitor remarked afterward, “You go to the White House, you shake hands with Roosevelt and hear him talk—and then you go home to wring the personality out of your clothes.” The rest of this book tells the story of TR’s irresistible rise to power. (He himself compared his trajectory to that of a rocket.) It is, in effect, the biography of seven men—a naturalist, a writer, a lover, a hunter, a ranchman, a soldier, and a politician—who merged at age forty-two to become the youngest President in our history. Rarely has any public figure exercised such a charismatic hold on the popular imagination. Edith Wharton likened TR’s vitality to radium. H. G. Wells said that he was “a very symbol of the creative will in man.” Walter Lippmann characterized him simply as our only “lovable” chief executive. During the years 1858–1901, Theodore Roosevelt, the son of a wealthy Yankee father and a plantation-bred southern belle, transformed himself from a frail, asthmatic boy into a full-blooded man. Fresh out of Harvard, he simultaneously published a distinguished work of naval history and became the fist-swinging leader of a Republican insurgency in the New York State Assembly. He had a youthful romance as lyrical—and tragic—as any in Victorian fiction. He chased thieves across the Badlands of North Dakota with a copy of Anna Karenina in one hand and a Winchester rifle in the other. Married to his childhood sweetheart in 1886, he became the country squire of Sagamore Hill on Long Island, a flamboyant civil service reformer in Washington, D.C., and a night-stalking police commissioner in New York City. As assistant secretary of the navy under President McKinley, he almost single-handedly brought about the Spanish-American War. After leading “Roosevelt’s Rough Riders” in the famous charge up San Juan Hill, Cuba, he returned home a military hero, and was rewarded with the governorship of New York. In what he called his “spare hours” he fathered six children and wrote fourteen books. By 1901, the man Senator Mark Hanna called “that damned cowboy” was vice president of the United States. Seven months later, an assassin’s bullet gave TR the national leadership he had always craved. His is a story so prodigal in its variety, so surprising in its turns of fate, that previous biographers have treated it as a series of haphazard episodes. This book, the only full study of TR’s pre-presidential years, shows that he was an inevitable chief executive, and recognized as such in his early teens. His apparently random adventures were precipitated and linked by various aspects of his character, not least an overwhelming will. “It was as if he were subconsciously aware that he was a man of many selves,” the author writes, “and set about developing each one in turn, knowing that one day he would be President of all the people.” Theodore Rex (Theodore Roosevelt series Book 2) http://www.amazon.com/Theodore-Rex-R...dmund+morris#_ Theodore Rex is the story—never fully told before—of Theodore Roosevelt’s two world-changing terms as President of the United States. A hundred years before the catastrophe of September 11, 2001, “TR” succeeded to power in the aftermath of an act of terrorism. Youngest of all our chief executives, he rallied a stricken nation with his superhuman energy, charm, and political skills. He proceeded to combat the problems of race and labor relations and trust control while making the Panama Canal possible and winning the Nobel Peace Prize. But his most historic achievement remains his creation of a national conservation policy, and his monument millions of acres of protected parks and forest. Theodore Rex ends with TR leaving office, still only fifty years old, his future reputation secure as one of our greatest presidents. |

Bargain @ $2.99 from Open Road Media for the rest of the month (couponable @ Kobo, should be available in all the standard stores, prices good in Canada & US, possibly other regions as well, etc.):
Ebooks by and About Iconic Feminists, $2.99 Through November, mostly non-fiction, though there are a couple of fiction pieces scattered throughout. There's a Gloria Steinem essay collection, a critique of Virginia Woolf's literary works, a couple of biographies of Queens Consorts and wives of famous Russian literary figures which both look interesting, and many more. And there's also a biography of Victoria Woodhull (first female candidate for POTUS, first female stockbroker and weekly newspaper starter and free love advocate (not first for that, though), etc., she had an interesting-sounding life which is just barely outlined by her Wikipedia entry) which I've had on my wishlist since it was originally available via e-reads on Fictionwise before they got acquired by ORM, so I'm definitely getting that. |

Highly-Rated, Massive Tome on World War II, for Not Much $$$
The Second World War. By Antony Beevor. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 234 reviews at the present moment. Print list price $20.00; digital list price $9.99; Kindle price now $3.99. Hachette Book Group, publisher. 843 pages. http://www.amazon.com/Second-World-W...rld+war+beevor.
Book Description Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of WWII. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, the Second World War. In this searing narrative that takes us from Hitler's invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 to V-J day on August 14th, 1945 and the war's aftermath, Beevor describes the conflict and its global reach--one that included every major power. The result is a dramatic and breathtaking single-volume history that provides a remarkably intimate account of the war that, more than any other, still commands attention and an audience. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's grand and provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on this complex, tragic, and endlessly fascinating period in world history, and confirms once more that he is a military historian of the first rank. http://www.amazon.ca/Rise-Theodore-R.../dp/B004DEPH3E An excellent book. I think it won a Pulitzer. I've "read" it via audio CD. I'm really glad to get an ebook for such a nice price. Alas, Theodore Rex was not on sale at amazon.ca (still $CDN 13.99) ![]() |

Bargain @ $1.99 each (couponable @ Kobo if you want to use up any lingering contest codes while they're still valid, probably available in all the standard stores, prices good for Canada & US, perhaps also in other regions, etc.):
Sicily: Three Thousand Years of Human History by Sandra Benjamin, out from Steerforth Press, which happens to have as one of its imprints Pushkin Press, who've recently shown up in a BBC article on books in translation. Anyway, this is a fairly substantial-looking 500 page reasonably comprehensive history for which some of the customer reviews say is a bit shaky on the early Greek-influenced portions and a few other things but fairly solid for the main part after that. Tourists, armchair travelers, and historians will all delight in this fluid narrative that can be read straight through, dipped into over time, or used as a reference guide to each period in Sicily’s fascinating tale. Emigration of people from Sicily often overshadows the importance of the people who immigrated to the island through the centuries. These have included several who became Sicily’s rulers, along with Jews, Ligurians, and Albanians. Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Goths, Byzantines, Muslims, Normans, Hohenstaufens, Spaniards, Bourbons, the Savoy Kingdom of Italy and the modern era have all held sway, and left lasting influences on the island’s culture and architecture. Sicily’s character has also been determined by what passed it by: events that affected Europe generally, namely the Crusades and Columbus’s discovery of the Americas, remarkably had little influence on Italy’s most famous island. Maps, biographical notes, suggestions for further reading, a glossary, pronunciation keys, and much more make this unique book as essential as it is enjoyable. A Dreadful Murder: The Mysterious Death of Caroline Luard by Minette Walters (SYKM, Wikipedia). This is the popular crime novelist's dramatized true crime reconstruction of the unsolved "Seal Chart Murder" (Wikipedia), in the form of a 144-page novella (according to the Amazon estimated page count), out from Pan Macmillan. A body is found in the woods . . . Based on the true story of the shocking murder of Mrs Caroline Luard, which took place in Kent in August 1908. Caroline Luard is shot dead in broad daylight in the grounds of a large country estate. With few clues available, her husband soon becomes the suspect . . . But is he guilty? Bringing to life the people involved in this terrible crime, in A Dreadful Murder bestselling author Minette Walters uses modern detective skills to attempt to solve a 100-year-old crime. Bargain @ $2.99 from Sourcebooks (couponable @ Kobo, etc. etc.): The Successful Novelist: A Lifetime of Lessons about Writing and Publishing by David Morrell (Wikipedia), probably best known for his novel First Blood, which was turned into the popular Rambo film franchise. Dirty Little Secrets: Breaking the Silence on Teenage Girls and Promiscuity by Kerry Cohen (Wikipedia), a cultural sociology-oriented follow-up to her 2008 memoir Loose Girl. 301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions by Vicky Oliver, has blurb praise from a couple of business coach and top exec types. |

The Amazon webpage in the U.S., http://www.amazon.com/Rise-Theodore-...osevelt+morris, at least, shows, in the list of other formats available, the price for the "Audible Audio Edition, Unabridged Edition" (this is "Whispersync-ready") as $0.00. Something is awry. If you follow the link, you get a page that says that the audiobook is $26.95 (although in the list of other formats, it shows the price as $0.00 again!). The "Whispersync for Voice"-->"Add Narration" box shows the price as $3.99, but if you follow the link, you will get the same webpage (or one that looks the same) If you go directly to the Audible webpage for the audiobook, it shows a price of $26.95, with no mention of a Whispersync price that I can see. I don't mean to be ![]() |

Every single audiobook on Amazon is currently showing the $0.00 price in the other formats list, so it's a sitewide glitch rather than anything to do with this particular book. (Possibly the "free audiobook for a new membership" pricing is being shown to all users by mistake.) The Whispersync price is $3.99, as listed, and that price will appear on the Amazon and Audible audio product pages for anyone who has purchased the e-book.

I keep forgetting about that option, and I've probably bought some Kindle ebooks, that I didn't need to (because my library has it), in order to get a cheaper audiobook via Whispersync. If I can borrow it from my library, I can just pay for the audiobook and skip buying the Kindle ebook! |
