I've been using a Kobo WiFi since it first came out years ago and I have loved it! However, last night I went to purchase a book from kobobooks.com and noticed something different. There was no option for downloading the book in Adobe DRM/EPUB format. I proceeded with the purchase only to find out that the book is in EPUB3 format and it will not sync to my Kobo WiFi (I have the latest firmware upgrade). If any of you have ever contacted Kobo support you know what a frustrating experience that can be. They would not come out and say it, but after spending hours with them on the phone I've come to the conclusion that the Kobo WiFi simply does not support EPUB3 - at least not yet. I've heard rumors that older E-Ink devices like mine do not support EPUB3. I hope that isn't true because I love E-Ink - it's so easy on my eyes. I hate reading on backlit devices. I ended up using installing the Kobo app on my wife's android device and the book would sync to it. I guess it might be time to buy a new Kobo device. Technology marches on and sometimes it drags us along too!

Yes, it will download to Kobo desktop.

I've purchased two books actually, both in EPUB3 format and neither will sync to my Kobo Wifi: "The Girl With All The Gifts" "The Martian" Both are relatively new publications. I actually reset my Kobo WiFi to remove all books from it and them I synced my library again using both the Kobo desktop software and again using a direct WiFi connection from my Kobo to the store. In both cases, all the non EPUB3 books in my library synced but the EPUB3 books are skipped - no error messages, they're simply skipped. So I'm using the Kobo app on my wife's android to read them but I really hate a backlit screen - it's hard on my eyes. |

Lets call them kEpub and not ePub3..

Have you looked for Apprentice Alf and the extra download available for Kobo format material that will strip the DRM from eEpubs.... |

I'm excited, you're the first person I've heard of that has 1.9.11 working on a Kobo Wifi! Did you have any trouble with the upgrade, or did it just pop on there? I'm asking because I've been avoiding connecting my Wifi to the Kobo Desktop for fear of bricking it (I'm kinda attached).

Two techniques come to mind, one would be to scan the ebook and look for epub3 extensions, the other would be to open it with an epub2 renderer and see how it looks. Either would be fairly time consuming. I'd suspect that is why Kobo is now supplying ebooks that have the version 3.0 flag as kepub only with no epub download option to avoid issues with people attempting to open an epub3 fixed layout ebook using an epub2 renderer. Not that the ACCESS renderer looks all that great with a FLO ebook but at least it's readable.

At this point, I'm not sure what to do. Kobo tech support closed my case incident despite the fact I replied that their fix did not work (they simply asked me to reinstall the Kobo Desktop software which has nothing to do with the fact that my Kobo WiFi will not load these new kepub format books). I'm willing to invest in a new ereader but it has to be E-Ink. Thanks for your replies.

I just received an e-mail from Kobo tech support. They're instructing me to try and use Adobe Digital Editions to sync the book to my e-reader instead of the Kobo Desktop App. I'll give it a go tomorrow and update you.

Using Digital Editions will not work. There is no "Adobe DRM EPUB" download button for books with EPUB3 extensions, so I cannot obtain the URLLINK.acsm file.
