Because MDI cost them nothing and was approved when Office 2003 passed software compliance and was installed when Office 2003 installed.

I bet you were trying to convince the IT department. You should have been talking to management.

Pitch it as a money issue- it doesn't cost them anything. Or, when there is a discussion of upgrading to Office 2007, point out that Office 2007 dropped support for all Word document formats before (I think) Word 97. Open Office still supports those documents.

Also, unless the DR1000 is used company-wide, can't you just convert the docs they pass to you by yourself, for your own viewing on your very own DR1000?

Sure, but that would require I copy the documents from the office computer to another computer, convert them and then copy them to the DR.

I can't install a PDF writer or conversion software onto the office PC.

Would have been nice to just copy them from my office computer to the DR

Apparently not. It doesn't let you do all the things you can with the full Adobe product, but if you just want to convert a document to a PDF it works fine. We're thinking about rolling it out at work because we're fed up with people asking for the full version of Adobe just to do straightforward conversions.

Certainly where I work, the opposite is the case.
