I knew we wouldn't have many trick or treaters this year. I bought enough candy to fill a kitchen sink to ensure we wouldn't.

I grew up in an apartment house neighborhood, and would finish up the night with 4-5 LARGE shopping bags (the big ones with handles) full of goodies, as well as a box full of money collected for UNICEF. I had to stop back at my house 2-3 times to drop them off and pick up another empty bag. 75-100 kids in the streets, running door-to-door to gain as much booty as possible before our curfew.

My mother would immediately throw away anything that wasn't commercially wrapped, figuring that there was a monster out there who was making popcorn balls with poison in them.

By the time I was in my twenties, there were no kids running door to door any longer, as the reality was there IS a monster out there putting poison or needles into the goodies, and not just into the home-made ones.

"Trick or Treating" pretty much stopped in most of 'urban' America, and were never a part of the holiday in these parts, but Halloween Parties are now the norm all over Asia.

My neighborhood was, as usual, absolutely covered in trick or treaters. I froze my butt off handing out most of my bowl, then when the police drove by handing out candy, I made them take the rest of my bowl to finish handing out, so I could go in and warm up!

We emptied a huge mixing bowl full of candy, and had to scavenge in the cupboard for packets of marshmallows, before taking down the Halloween candle on the letterbox because we'd been cleaned out. Halloween's big in this neighbourhood, and growing. Lots of fabulous costumes, too.

We had several trick-or-treaters. All young -- most very young, with their parents as escorts. One was in a wagon being pulled by Dad. I kept the lights on until 9:30, whiuch is about a half hour later than the town's guidelines.

No teenagers this year.

I was home alone, as my wife was at a work party, my youngest two out trick-or-treating with friends, and my eldest was playing a gig in London. So I switched the lights off and hid with a bottle of wine and a sirloin steak

Very few trick or treaters this year.

We've lived here for 4 or 5 years now and this year has been the first very slim year.

It's mostly irritating because in this area one of the local churches is sort of fear-mongering people into going to their "trunk or treat" stuff. (They pass out numerous fliers about how trunk-or-treating at their church is safer, which is bullsh*t.)

We always get fast food on Halloween and I have to drive by them and they had people parking off the side of the highway because their parking lot (which is pretty sizeable) was filled.

Without going into details, my house is not religious and we do not want to go to a church just to even be able trick or treat.

The important thing is that the kids had fun. Which they did. So that half makes up for it. Hopefully next year will be better.
