Well, that depends on if the leaks are true or not. According to the leaked specs, the second gen Kindle will not have an SD slot. However, since it will almost certainly have a USB connection, all the user would have to do is copy the books to the PC and then into the new Kindle.

However, I really can't see offering a Kindle without SD card functionality. If that's what they come out with, then I'll just be purchasing a Kindle from someone who has decided to "upgrade" .... and I use that term very loosely in this case.

So you no longer believe your earlier quoted statement.

"Up to 6" in context: shared among no more than six but doesn't mean don't or can't own more.

You go to a gas station (during gas rationing in the 70's), you may have a car with an 11 gallon tank, but you may not purchase more than 5 gallons due to rationing. You *could* take on more *if* allowed.

In this example you could, of course, go to another gas station and buy another 5 gallons (if you were willing to wait in another long line) but you get my point.

Yes. Now that I think about it... and also realize that the text was in a FAQ written by a forum member I think you can have up to 6 registered kindles.

Do you see a way to "register" a kindle vs assign a book to it... I don't.

You can register and de-register a Kindle from your "Manage my Kindle" page. Is that what you mean?

No... you were implying that you can "register" more than 6 Kindles but when you buy a book it can only be read on 6 of them. But, there is no way to specify what kindles you are buying content for... or a way to assign it... (exception subscriptions.)

I guess we just need to have someone buy 7 Kindles and try this. But... I pretty much believe now that you can only "register" 6 in total on your account.

Yes, my belief is that there is no limit to how many Kindles may be purchased or registered to one account. I have only seen the "six Kindles" reference in relation to sharing not to purchasing or registering.

As I said before, it was your post that I quoted that caused me to look at it in this way.

Since, I've written CS, I will wait to hear what they say. We should have a definitive answer either way. If my belief is wrong I will post their response and stand corrected.

I am only slightly interested in the answer because it is acedemic. I don't think I will ever got anywhere near owning 6 Kindles. I doubt I would ever have more than two.... and only then if by some miracle my wife decides she wants to use one, or they come out with a large format version at a sub $400 price which I would get for my tech/programming/manual type PDF books.

True, it may be more relent for a family where each member has kindle, and perhaps an extended family who chooses to share an account if they share tastes in reading.

While I don't have a kindle, we do have a Sony prs 500 and 2 Cybooks (Spread among my family), and may end up adding a couple of more in the near future . IF we standardised on a single reader, it is very much possible that we could reach the 6 unit limit sometime in the future.

I have received a non-response from Amazon. I don't see why it's so difficult to answer this question (unless they want to connect me with Bezos ). I want a response in writing.

A new response.

Quote:
Greetings from Amazon.com.

I have reviewed our previous correspondence and apologize for any frustration you have felt thus far. There is no limit to the number of Kindles that can be registered to a single account. However you will only be able to view a Kindle book from up to 6 Kindles at any given time.

Most books come with a maximum of six licenses, but their are some books that may have less. The amount of licenses a book comes with is determined by the author or publisher who owns the right to the content.

I hope this information answered your question. Our goal is to help you get the most out of your Kindle experience. If you need further assistance, please contact customer support at 1-866-321-8851.

Thank you for choosing Kindle. Enjoy!

The content would have to be redownloaded as they would need to have the PID for the new Kindle in them for the DRM to allow them to be read.

Daffy,

I just got off the phone with Amazon (I called them because I was curious as to what would happen if Amazon lost the rights on a particular book ... would it be removed from the Media Library of all users .... answer yes, so back up your purchases people).

It turns out that you can purchase as many Kindles as you want ... HOWEVER, you can only have six Kindles registered to any one account.

So, if you owned twelve Kindles, you would have to have two accounts at Amazon and you would have to authorize and deauthorize the Kindles between the two accounts in order to read the various books that were purchased on each account.

Although .... now I've got another question for them .... and I think I'll write this one instead of calling it in.

Since there is the possibility that a book could be removed from your Media Library (because the publisher pulls it), granted that you can download books to your computer to keep a back up copy .... if the book you download is keyed to a PID, then .... how do you go from backup copy back to each of your Kindles??

I haven't had any problems .... but I want to see what they have to say about it.
