Kindle Voyage - First Impressions

Those both look really good! The Voyage looks like it has slightly darker text but that might be the lighting falling differently on the two devices.

It depends where you normally read. If you spend most of your time reading outdoors, or in good artificial light, you would indeed be better off with the basic Kindle, but for someone (like me) who spends most of their time in situations where the light is needed, the extra readability due to the light far, far outweighs the minor loss of of clarity that the light diffuser produces.

I have the light on my PW2 set at 10. It's the setting that works best for me in poor light. Enough light to clearly illuminate the screen, without obvious "shining".

I can read at 10... with my glasses . I can read at 10 without on my Voyage, not on my PW2, or let's say not very long. Long-sighted + astigmatism = need a good e-reader

My old Kindle basic is sharper than the PW2, not quite as sharp as the Voyage.

The K4NT (Kindle 4 non Touch) was sharper. The Kindle Keyboard too. But they had no light.
Why do we have to go over this, over and over and over and over again ?

You want sharpness + no light = get the basic Kindle
You want good screen + light = get the PW
You want great sharpness + light = get the Voyage

You are still moaning ? get another device, a Kobo, a Pocketbook, a chinese one.

It is not as if Amazon was FORCING you into buying a Kindle, for heaven's sake !

Same here on all counts, but starting to have vision issues with relation to darkness. I guess that's why I need the higher setting. Even with my KV I needed the higher light setting, though I didn't need the same size font. Thank you.

You are correct Harry however I would like to add one thing to your statements:

If you are someone that needs to adjust the light multiple times becuase you get the setting wrong perhaps the voyage is the better product for you since it has the sensor.

If you usually get the light setting right then perhaps the paper white will do just as well as the voyage does without the price.

I think the basic idea is people want the quality that the company advertises it produces and thus eliminate the hassle of returning a device with lighting or other low quality issues.

I do think though that many people will heed your advice and buy a different ereader or perhaps a tablet and not go through this nonsense.

I don't think anyone here is under the delusion that we are forced to buy products in a capitalistic society. Thank you.

I noticed as I compared PW2s with my PW1 and KK, that the type was crisper on the KK and on the PWs with the more "white" lighting. The PW2s that had the yellow screens had a more washed-out appearance that was very obvious to me when looking at the screensavers. I started each one on the same screensaver and not only was the yellow more noticeable, but the crispness and sharpness was lacking - those are the ones that went back. With my KV since the top was yellow and slightly opaque, I could only compare the bottom 2/3s which was white, beautiful, and sharper/more contrasty than the yellow PW2s and more similar to the white PW2s and PW1.

I want the quality of a company advertises without all the hassle of recalls that auto makers seem to issue.
