So, here a pic of my PW2 (which I already consider to be very good) next to my Voyage. I will try to make more pics this evening with different lighting conditions.
This was taken with both device lights set at 10, but this was made with my phone because I don't have a camera here right now. |

Your Voyage looks pretty good in that photo aceflor. I'm really very happy with my PW2, but from that picture, I can clearly see what people are meaning when they say the clarity of the text on the Voyage makes the PW text look almost blurry. It's very impressive in fact, but I'm still not upgrading though!

Gilles Martin-Chauffier "la femme qui dit non". Extremely good so far, style quite similar to "Au revoir là haut" by Pierre Lemaitre (Goncourt 2014) which I can also strongly recommend.

Yes, photos do not render it that well I am afraid. Obviously the upper part of my Voyage is a tad creamier than the lower part, but considering the light source is in the lower part of the bezel I understand that you cannot have the exact samer tone everywhere, nevertheless the variance in mine is negligible. I agree that other Voyages I have seen here do look worse, I would not have settled for that either.

My question is this, does the voyage add $70 worth of value? That's a question each of us needs to answer ourselves and will most likely differ based on who you talk to. I don't the increased resolution since this is text, if this was a graphic book then I could see the emphasis on the resolution, how much resolution do you need to display text? Thus it comes down to the decrease in the size of the reader and the sensor. My question is this - do the new voyage owners like the sensor and decrease of the size enough to make it worth your extra dollars?
There are some advantages that I can see for the sensor, frequently I get out to the bus stop in the morning, and its too early for the sun to be up yet, and I turn on the paper white's book light and I frequently need to adjust the light a few times to get it right. The light sensor would eliminate that adjustments, since the reader is doing it I would imagine that the sensor would get it right the first time, unlike me. |

Well, for me it allows me to read without my glasses. Granted, this will last only a few months because my sight is decreasing and that's it, so at a certain point I will need the glasses again, because there is no way I want to read with a bigger than normal font size and have to turn page every 4 sentences. But that's just me.
As I said before somewhere here, no, it is not worth a difference of 90 EUR (in Germany). 80 $ ? Nah. 50 $ ? yes. I think Amazon went overboard this time, and do ask me about the covers. I got an origami plastic for 39$ and although it is great, it is also vastly overpriced. But, and that's what is important in the end, I don't regret getting both the Voyage and the case. I don't feel cheated, if that's what you are trying to guess. The Voyage is a premium product, if you don't need/want the bells and jingles, the PW2 does an excellent job too. But the definition and the contrast is definitely better on the Voyage. Anyone having had one next to a PW2 in the hand will confirm that. The Voyage is not a product replacement for the PW2 in the Kindle range, it is a separate product placed in the premium segment. The strategy seems coherent to me. You don't have to get a Voyage to have a good quality e-reader, the PW2 does this very well. I don't understand the outcry, sincerely. We all still have a choice..... I will hold off on deciding if it is worth to upgrade for the extra resolution when a perfectly good working PW1 is still here to read. It is still working fine, but it is not being used at the moment (as in not at all) due to my new phone being finally not too small any more. Before the jump to 5.7" screen on my Note 4 it was only comfortable to read on the bigger 6" PW for long periods at a time instead of my old phone. |

I saw a video review by Those Goodereader clowns, who claimed that the new Basic Kindle screen was actually sharper and crisper than the Voyage, and it certainly looked it on the video. However it depends whether this was due to the video, the Basic Kindle model or the Voyage model. Interesting thought though. If and when my PW1 gives up, I'll definitely have a look at the new Basic Kindle.

For me, it's worth the extra money. The better resolution is just that much better, and having put a PW2 next to the Voyage, the screen is so much sharper on the Voyage it makes long reading sessions a breeze.
The autolight sensor doesn't work well, but I thought it adapts over time if you change the settings, in which case with time as it "learns" your lighting preferences it should be fine. I like the buttons, I turned the haptic feedback off, but otherwise they are pretty darned good. My screen lighting was awful though, perceptible at all light settings (although not bothersome on the lowest setting). The gradient from top to bottom is distracting, and it causes a difference in clarity of the text--the bottom text is super sharp, the top text appears almost a little smudged, like there is a film over the top of the device. I want one of these with even (I'd even settle for close to even) lighting, and for the price they're asking, the frontlight should be at least as good, if not better, than the PW2. It's not, not even close. My "old" basic Kindle is sharper than either PW1 or 2, despite the lower the ppi, but the Voyage screen, with the light low, is sharper than the basic. Adding all that technology to the screen also has an effect on clarity IMHO. Last edited by cct1; 10-30-2014 at 09:12 AM. |

I must admit that the voyage has a rather bad image with me for the simple reason is that its "top of the line." I do not feel that a dad with small kids should be working with a top of the line anything, which would be different if my mrs and I were DINKS (Double Income No Kids) or retired, however the top of the line seems like being to selfish to me. My 2012 paper white is old and slow, when compared to my fleet footed 2014 basic but it does the job adequately, when I go to the bus stop early in the morning its the only game in town, its dark out when I get to the bus stop. My 2014 basic is bottom of the barel but its a speedy bottom of the barel.
